Tobacco Fiend,

do you seriously believe that crappola you spouted?

Im learning it cause ITS FUN to know another language. After I get good at Korean, I will also study Japanese. I also have plans to brush up on my Slovak, Czech and start studying Russian. Before Im 35 I will be fluent at 6 languages. Thats power. People with language skills are in demand all over the world.

I got the Ganada elementary 2 book and finished it in 1 week. Im gonna have to get the 1st intermediate level book, but cant find it here. I found the elemntary 2 book very very easy but I got a lot of practice reviewing what I know. I like the design of the book, though I wish there were more readings in it.Maybe the higher levels have more readings. I like the amount of practice that the book gives you.

If you're not in the family register, you are not Korean. You are thus subhuman and your finest attempts at speaking the master-race language will only meet with ridicule.

Learning the language is not about wanting to be accepted in this society. I realise we will never be accepted fully in this society, but knowing the language can, is, and will continue to make my life better and easier here. Plus I just think it's good to know a language, it's actually good for your mind and makes your thinking more flexible ( that's actually clinically proven ). Plus, as for it being a useless endevour, you see those western guys on tv who are fluent in Korean and teach celebrities on that English program? Have a guess at what they're earning! So few westerners ever really nail Korean totally that you can become pretty famous just from speaking the language well, and it can and does open up all kinds of doors for those with initiative.

I'm still a rookie at learning Korean (6 months here) but here are my two cents:

-Catching snippets and phrases in different places is a good way to learn. Therefore, trying different language resources helps. I study the Ganada books, which wouldn't be good on its own because of all the awkward honorific forms that foreigners aren't really expected to use anyways.
The Sogang website has lots of casual and informal speech patterns, ie. the way people really talk in Korean.

-Having a Korean friend who doesn't speak a lick of English helps big-time. I make real progress when I HAVE to speak it, not when someone asks me to speak Korean just because she thinks it's cute. Friends can also help you cut through the irrelevant BS so you don't waste your time.

I'm a long ways from being truly functional in Korean, but studying it has made my life here easier and more enjoyable. Even though I'm only likely to spend a year here, it's totally worthwhile to study the language. Koreans love it when you make an effort, no matter how garbled it is.

Plus it seems like the hottest girls here often can't speak English Twisted Evil .

There are free Korean Language classes for beginners and intermediate students at Inha University in Incheon.

The beginner class is on Tuesday night from 6:30 to 9:00pm. The textbook is book 1 from Seoul National's Korean language program.

The class just started last Tuesday, so it won't be a problem for you to join if you have time.

Instructor: Bae Gae Hwa [email protected]

Book recommendation... The Sogang University online Korean book is great, and my girlfriend says the language is good (it is language that Koreans actually use instead of textbook Korean).
