I can do that on my laptop.

OSx-86, XP and Linux no worries.

Dual core, 1GB ram, decent graphics card, hdd, and at the time 15,000B cheaper than a base model Mac.

"Macs are really good here for the shopping websites, banking, just about any of the IE optimized sites. Really good they are."

I can do banking on my Mac, I don't care about G-Market, and...hmm...the only sites that really give Macs fits are the IE optimized KOREAN sites that put a whole bunch of tracking, specializing, generally mucking-your-computer-up crap on your PC -- and I stay away from those like the plague.

However, I will concede Macs are still a bit of a niche machine.

I love my Macs because it runs the Adobe software I use everyday so well. The new OS allows for more streamlining of graphic media (creating, searching, indexing, etc etc)

And a biggie for me, I don't have to worry about viruses or the like.

I don't 'game' (except for some occasional stuff on my Wii). I think that is seriously the only reason why one would need to get a PC with 2 gigs of RAM and a tricked out graphics card ....

...-- so any arguments about the Mac being underpowered are nullified if one doesn't care about gaming -- for design, the Mac is the industry standard and has been for some time.

For what I want to do, Macs are wonderful for me. AND, I also have a PC, I think there is room enough in the world for both, I never understood the bickering.

(BTW, to stay on the OP's topic, I have an iMac and a Macbook -- and I love the portability I can get to create-on-the-go with my 'book, but when I really want to sit down and do some serious work, my iMac wins hands down with the not crappy keyboard, bigger and not so washed-out screen, and what not.)

Re: the Macbook vs Macbook pro debate. Macbooks are cheaper but not a much better value anymore. the 15' macbook pros have the backlit keyboard, at least 128mb video cards, faster processor speeds, a much nicer form factor, the expansion slot, a firewire 800 port and my favorite feature an LED backlit screen (this is much brighter and saves loads of power, I get nearly 5 hours watching movies).

Re: Why would you want to run windows on a mac? Because it eliminates any limitations of using a mac because of software. You posted about the limitations of internet browsers on a mac, and using windows eliminates those concerns. I realize that you seem to hate apple products but if you are going to post about them post something relevant.

As for the op's original question I would say go for the 24' imac. For the hd space, speed, gorgeous display and importantly the usb ports (all mac portables except the 17 mb pro come with 2- lame).

You have good taste. I have that and a Macbook Pro. I can second that getting a Pro is FAR better than a standard Macbook.
