Some people think too much.

The first thing that came to my mind was "what country did you come from?"

North American english does use different words and sentences than UK english.

Thus maybe you used a sentence that would be acceptable in my country and you are, and he doesn't.

Therefore, it would first depend on the culture that created the sentence and not on the concept of listening vs hearing.

But as someone once said;

"I think too much" so maybe the others are (simplifing it) - (will edit this spelling once sober).
