| i did manage to edit some photos earlier - but still - working my way around the os is a bit difficult - i'm quite the novice at the mac - i really would like a tutorial to follow - i just don't get why there isn't one available. |
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ |
that was one of the first things i found and i also think it sucks but that's just me - the thing is most of it i'm beyond - i've used computers for years, just not macs - i needed this one for final cut pro - and some other film editing work -
i had to reload my os over the weekend and now things are working better but i do want to do regular maintenance on it to keep things smooth - the forums weren't that helpful either only 2 people responded -
**about the download for the mp3 program** quicktime was taking over and not giving me an option to save to disk - when i reinstalled the os i managed to find all the options to stop that in its tracks so to speak, that is, i also downloaded real player, and mozilla and on my mozilla options i was able to set up the "always ask what to do with a file download" so it has to wait and let me tell it what to do with the mp3 file.
**ok new question**
what about the right click context menu? i can't seem to get that working - but i use the track pad, not a real mouse, is that why?
thanks again!! |

[quote="boatofcar"]Oh, and in response to your original question, to download the podcast,
1. Click on the listen/watch entire podcast link. ( I assume you got that far )
2. Ctrl-Click on the Download hour one - 28M mp3.
3. In the window that pops up, click on Save Link As.
4. A box will pop up showing you the name of the file, as well as where you'd like to save it. Saving to your desktop is fine for this.
5. When you plug in your mp3 player, it should mount on your desktop like any external hard drive.
6. Drag the file from your desktop into the music folder of your mp3 player.[/quote
I AM SOO PISSED RIGHT NOW!!!
all my preferences are set to download files and ask where to do this - yet Quicktime has just hijacked it anyway - DESPITE those preferences also being set - it isn't even supposed to play my mp3 files!!!!
WTF????
just a few days ago it was WORKING PERFECTLY!!
i TRIED control clicking but it STILL wants to play it automatically - how do I do block this? obviously i'll need quicktime on my computer for movies at some point - ! jees this REALLY pisses me off!!!
quite simply it will NOT let me save the file - anywhere - hd, mp3 player - it just wants to play it.
ADVICE?? |

Have you tried this...?
Don't double click the file you want to open.
Click it once, and then, in the FILE menu, select "open with..."
That will give you a list of applications to open that file with.
Another thing you might want to do, is find a torrent to download Quicktime Pro. It has more features which will come in handy if you download movies. |

Dude, when you control-click on the hyperlink, the web page shouldn't change; all that should happen is that a box will open that looks exactly like it does when you right-click something in windows. If that's not happening you've done something really weird to your system that I've never encountered before. |

| I think that you are getting hung up on the fact that Quicktime is opening when you don't want it to. Quicktime opens after the download is completed. You just need to close Quicktime, and find your download. Also, I think you do need a two button mouse. |

You still having troubles, Moosehead? I've been using Macs for over 5 years now, and have a pretty firm grasp of how to troubleshoot basic setup problems and stuff. I can also give you a crash course on how to use the thing. PM me if you need some help. I don't mind--I have very little to do for the entire month of December. If you live in Seoul, I can come over and show you the ropes in person, so long as you provide some beer. I can't show you everything (I'm not a poweruser), but I can help solve the simpler problems you've been having.
Anyways, I can totally understand the frustrations of a first time Mac user. When I first started using a mac, I hated it. After a while, it grew on me, and now I have a hard time finding my way around on PCs. My mac drives my girlfriend absolutely CRAZY almost every day, lol.... It can be tricky switching from a PC to a Mac, since things that you think should work one way work a different way....
Some tips:
1. Use the Mac Help application that comes with your OS. To get there, just click in the menubar, where it says "help". The front page of the help application will say "Discovering Your Mac: Work Smart, Play Hard". Click here, and there's a tutorial.
2. Get a two-button USB mouse with a scroll wheel. I'd suggest a wireless one. If you have a single-button mouse (or your current two-button mouse is messed up), you have to hold CONTROL when you do a left-click to simulate a right-click. It's a pain in the ass, just get decent a two-button mouse and save yourself the headache.
3. To download a file that appears in your webbrowser as a link, you have to right-click the link. DON'T left-click it, as this will most often just load the file in your webbrowser (or play it through Quicktime--I suspect you have quicktime set as your default web media player or something like that, which is why it overrides). So, right click the link...this will bring up a drop-down menu, with a list of options. Select "download linked file", and it will download to your computer. You should be able to easily drag it over to your mp3 player then. (Not sure if there's an automated way to synchronize your MP3 player...ipods synch automatically, but iTunes is made FOR iPods. Anyways, your MP3 player should still work fine, acting as an external harddrive.)
4. DON'T double-click anything, except for icons. You only have to single-click most things on a Mac. If you double-click, you'll often open up multiple instances of things, which eats up RAM, and is just a pointless frustration. For example, double-clicking links in your webbrowser will just end up pissing you off more than anything. You still have to double click icons to open applications and files, but a single-click will suffice to open the icon's preview in the finder. Also note that icons in the dock only require a single-click. |

what a sweetheart you are and what great info you provided!!
i'm so sorry i didn't come back to this post - i managed to just muddle my way thru it - am working on a grad degree online and just didn't have the time last fall to muck around any more -
i just found the tutorials you mentioned - i've asked about these and no one else seemed to know about them!!
i'd still like to take you up on some one-on-one tho - to get thru a few utilities etc and good maintenance prevention issues - my win nb is maybe my 4th computer and i never had a virus (knock on wood) and never crashed a hard drive (ohmygod burn a candle maybe kill a chicken) and hopefully all will be well on this mac but it's a big time purchase for me (macbook pro) for bigtime projects so i need to really stay on top of things
i'll pm you but just wanted to publicly state how much i appreciate your assistance and hope can return the favor on this site to others!
thanks! |
