Good choice by immigration, its perfectly fair and sensible. |
I won't be re-visiting NZ anytime soon. I like countries with a bit of culture. After visiting in 2003, I said, if a suicidal person was basically intent on killing themself but having a few small doubts, a visit to NZ will do the trick.
Britain having a very marginally worse problem with obesity than NZ is hardly the point. Not letting someone in because they're obese is controversial. I hate fat ba5tards just as much as the next person, but not letting them in the country is nuts in my opinion and the NZers are trying their best to keep anyone out, which is probably a good thing for all concerned, so who cares, I guess. |
Actually, I will disagree. If they're just coming to visit, yes, that's stupid. If they're immigrating and would qualify for a government healthcare system, then that's another thing. Personally, I think that the most reasonable thing would be to have them be allowed to come in and live, but not to benefit from the medical system, if that's the reason. They can then get insurance or something, or choose not to immigrate.
For somewhere like the US that doesn't have good free or low cost healthcare, then it wouldn't really make a difference. |

Sorry to offend your very delicate sensibilities. I think it's very sound. And if it discourages people from coming, especially pasty pommy gits like you, that's excellent. |

We're fueling your economy, buddy. Don't forget it.

Yes, yes, it's very important for Canadians to keep out all American tourists just as it's even MORE important for Americans to keep out all Canadian tourists. BTW, I haven't been back to Canada since 1994 after a guard was being such a *beep*. Well done Canada. May our American border guards treat Canadians the same. What comes around goes around. |

And what exactly is it that makes NZ so suicide inducing? Your mum didn't try to top herself when she was there did she? I mean that would be just sad now wouldn't it. |

In the strictest sense of the word "fueling", you have the relationship backwards. But, far be it for me to get in the middle of a Canuck/Yankee pissin contest, but I have crossed that border prolly around 70 times or more in my life. The Americans are far worse than the Canadian guards, and Canada generally has a more easily accessible immigration and customs regime. I dare say, as well, that Canada is a significantly more tolerant country than the USA as well.
But the suggestion that America keeps the Canadian economy going is true, but only in so far as any two massive economies side by side will do so. I think you had better be emotionally prepared for this relationship to switch slightly over the next few years. The 8 years of Bush mismanagement are going to be capital P Painful. |

BTW, Kiwis I love your accent. I've never had any trouble understanding any Kiwi.
Brits, on the other hand, are a very different story. I know Brits who can't even understand each other because the accents can vary considerably. Many Brits mumble a lot and I find it very unappealing. I've known different Europeans who've said they don't like the British accent because they have a difficult time understanding them.
One of these days, I'll go to New Zealand and I'm sure I'll love it there. I appreciate a carefree, easy going spirit with a sense of charm and candidness. I'm quite sure this is something most Brits know nothing about. And it's big time culture shock for them when they go to NZ.
p.s. Will they allow a woman in NZ who's a US size 6 and all of ten pounds overweight?

Given the fact the USD is so weak now, any sane American shopper would avoid going to Canada to buy anything regardless of customs and immigration people. |

| I used to work at a school with twenty foreign teachers about equally divided between Americans and Canadians. Since we had so many teachers we often had new teachers coming from overseas and sometimes we would have two teachers showing up at the same time. If we would have a Canadian girl and an American girl coming at the same time, the guys on the staff would bet on which one would be fatter. Great nationalistic fun. Yet it was never determined how to actually win the bet: having the fatter or thinner one from your country. |

| Nice. Not which would be "fat", but which one would be "fatter". Too true. |

Pretty much. But the other guy doesn't see it that way.
And we are fueling USA more than they know, with oil and other resources.
America likes to think that they help us and get nothing in return. They get plenty.

Ilsanman, start your own thread and prove it or STFU. You are hijacking a Kiwi thread with this nonsense.

Original. Can't defend yourself, so it's the standard STFU and get out.
No beans. I can prove you wrong but no need. We all know the truth. No one from America border shops in Canada, stupid!!

As is often the case, this reminds me of a Simpson's episode (the monorail).

Marge Simpson: Well, I think we should spend the money on something the whole town can be proud of.
Homer: Like a giant billboard that says "No fat chicks"?
Marge Simpson: No. |
