My sister's husband's best buddy used to live in Sunnyvale!!!! I thought he was so cool but actually he's so quiet. He never says anything. He just kind of laughs and hides under his hat.

My two sisters went and saw the TPBoys and said they are really nice. I was always in love with Ricki but that was during my booze head stage. Got over it. But love his sideburns. Love em.

One of my friends went to school with the guys who played Ricky and Julian. He said they pretty much act like that in real life, although obviously not quite the criminal streak.

Yeah, I don't see that comparison at all. TPB is more like the low-class version of Curb or the Office, while Earl is a straight sit-com. Plus, Earl is much better than TPB, possibly the best sitcom ever made.

That's a stretch. A scientologist running around with a moustache helping people is a good premise but it's not the best ever.

I stand by my statement. The sitcom is a type of program with very specific and stringent requirements. In the last ten or fifteen years most sitcoms have been about mocking or tweaking those requirements. Earl plays the sitcom straight, and does it better than any of the 60s-80s sitcoms ever did. It is the pinnacle of the of the format, thus far, and as sitcoms don't make money any more it might stand as such.

So, I suppose I've been converted. But I'm wondering, is this the Canadians version of white trash 'America.' Are there proper trailer parks in Canada, ala the US white trash/"greasy"/redneckish stereotypes? Is setting the show in Nova Scotia some Canadian joke I'm missing out on? I've not found any good sources of info on the show online. The Wiki is pretty general for a show that's supposedly as popular as I've heard TPB is in Canada.

Haha, I grew up near "Trailer Park City", Nova Scotia, and half of my elementary school/middle school/high school classes grew up in such places.

No it is not a joke, you're witnessing Nova Scotia's trailer park culture in Trailer Park Boys. What happened was, in the 1990s, urban black culture from the United States reared it's head in the rural areas of NS, and white rednecks of all ages (from 12-50) started imitating it as well as making it their own. What came of it is quite a bit similar to what you see in Trailer Park Boys a lot of time, that combined with the regular stupidity that has always been associated with the trailer parks back home.

My home town of... five thousand people... is loaded with "gansta" wannabes who drive around spray painting cars and other such territorial pissing. Who carries out these shenanigans? Sometimes teenagers, other times 30-50 year old men dressed up like greasy "gangstas". You can't reason with them because even their verbal forms of communication don't make any sense most of the time. You have to live there to even understand it--even then it doesn't make sense.

Yes, it is all quite a bit exaggerated / made clear in the show to be funny, but the reason I love the show so much is because I can watch it and be reminded of people I know/used to know, and it feels good to see one's culture in such a funny light.

Trailer Park Boys is not a sitcom.

Also, I would say at the very least that Seinfeld and The Office are both better sitcoms than My Name is Earl, and I could probably think up a few more.

That must be a joke. I was born and raised in New Brunswick and you could not help but meet a native person.

Correct, TPB is not a sitcom. Neither is The Office.

Seinfeld is a sitcom, but not in the traditional vein. Earl plays into the specific rules of the sitcom. That is be a situation comedy driven by the characters and their reactions to said situations and that there is a fable-like morale as the payoff to every episode. There are other great sitcoms (Arrested Development, Seinfeld) but Earl plays directly to what a sitcom is without tweaking the standards. It is the best straight sitcom ever made, though it doesn't have much competition (Family Ties, Different Strokes, etc.)

Why is The Office not a sitcom? Because it doesn't have a laughtrack?

I agree why is the office not a sitcom? I also don't see why a sitcom needs a moral. Fawlty Towers for example doesn't seem to have a moral. I'm sure nobody would say that is not a sitcom.

Not a joke. I have seen people of Native descent, but in most cases they were so well integrated you couldn't even tell they were Native. I haven't seen any traditional Natives... I think maybe I did once when we were a kid, at Kejimacujik, but aside from that... nothing.

We're not talking about "traditional" Natives. We're talking about Natives who wear second-hand clothes and bum smokes off everyone. (I used to date a Native chick and we used to drive out to the reservation every few weeks so she could buy as many cartons of cheap cigarettes as she could carry for resale, so I'm allowed to say that.)

TPB and The Office are mockumentaries.

We can agree to disagree on what makes a "traditional" sitcom. I'm going to avoid the douchery and let it go. It's too bad you don't appreciate Earl though.

I supported my 1.5pack/day smoking habit in Uni by getting smokes (paying for or playing pool for) off the reservation near my home. I might not have quit if I still had access to that... If I remember correctly, each treaty-status individual was entitled to 8 cartons tax free a week.

I love Trailer Park Boys. The plot is incidental to my enjoyment of each episode. I like their banter, how low-rent it is and how it reminded me of home with their use of red-necked slang.
