Alberta sets a good example in Canada, IMHO. Low minimum wage but no prov. sales tax and reforms of a few years ago have taken many of the working poor off the prov. income tax rolls.

Raising the basic personal exemption for income tax is a better way to go than min. wage increases.

That's right. It is important to remember that the people put out of work because of minimum wage laws are the ones who need the work experience the most. It is probably better to let employers pay what the market wage is and use tax policy and the like to help those who are very low paid. Also, it would be wise to find heavy tax incentives and even cash bonuses for the lowest paid (who are the lowest capable) to encourage them to go to trade school or other tech schools.

I think you're right about that, as that's the number my wife gave me a few weeks ago when I asked her. Then again, I suppose one of us could get off our ass and go find the exact number. Maybe it should even be me that does so, given that I'm the one who asked for statistics.
