As long as you're up to date with your shots you should be fine. I've been here sharing my bowls and wiping kids noses for almost 9 months and have had less colds and flus than I would have during the same time in New Zealand.

Glowstickgirl,

What you need to do to protect yourself is simple. When you move here, bring a bubble and live in it!
That will protect you from all the diseases you can imagine.
Or, as another option, take a deep breath, calm down and put things in perspective.
Or, finally, just don't come.

Jesus Mary and Joseph!!! Some people here are way too worried about hygiene. The world is dirty. Your country and mine and Korea. Don't worry about! You will survive sharing a meal with Koreans!!!

If I didn't already know how health-conscious some western (USA) countries are I would think this to be a very racist/ignorant thread.

I've been in Southern Cal for seven months now. I've caught two colds and the second one developed into bronchitis. My doctor, who grew up on the East Coast, said the region has a lot of pollen and dust (LA gets more polluted every year). So yeah, I do agree that though some places are more polluted than others, pollution is HARDLY exclusive to Korea or Asia.

You know, I've been doing some thinking about that during my time here. The over zealous no vaccinations/organic foods/no playing in the dirt brigade really get on my nerves.

I think part of the fun of childhood is getting into all sorts of messes, to find out what your body is capable of. Eg. the 2 second rule is there for reason, drinking dettol because it looks like coke isn't such a good idea (before any says anything it was my sister who did that, not me), sharing drinks/ice creams/half eaten sandwiches etc. won't always give you a nasty bug, trying to run into a tunnel at full speed when your a lot taller than the tunnel isn't such a good idea.

Ok, most parents have the urge to protect their offspring. As some of these childhood things could have been quite nasty (if my sister had drunk bleach the outcome would have been far different) so they have an obligation to make sure that kids are safe. But sometimes I worry that they've taken all the fun out of being a kid.

Same goes for sharing food here. SUnless you were raised by member of the anti fun brigade you probably did way worse things when you were a kid than sharing a bowl of food. If you managed to live this long it can't be that bad.

I think that generally you get by pretty well in life as long as you don't go chowing down too many garden slugs...

Quote:
Man nearly dies eating slugs
October 20, 2003

A SYDNEY student who ate slugs from a suburban backyard for a $20 dare got more than he bargained for when he contracted a potentially deadly form of meningitis.

The young man was diagnosed with eosinophilic meningitis, or swelling of the brain membranes, five weeks after eating two slugs in 2001, the Medical Journal of Australia reports today.

His friend also ate slugs but vomited them up, losing the $20 but saving himself a potential case of meningitis, parasitologist John Walker said.

There have been numerous similar cases recorded since 1971, including a child who died after eating garden snails and a person suspected of eating lettuce contaminated with slug or snail slime.

Dr Walker, from the University of Sydney, reports that the meningitis was caused by a worm found in rat lungs, but carried as larvae in slugs and snails.

"Repeated questioning revealed that the patient had ingested, five weeks earlier for a dare, two slugs from a garden in a Sydney suburb," Dr Walker wrote.

Dr Walker said the man needed to have fluid drained from his brain and spent 17 days in hospital. It was five months before he returned to full time studies and sport.

Yeah but did he get the 20 bucks...?

You be the judge:

Before Korea, I was not sick for seven years (except allergies). In Korea for two years, sick more often than not, including two serious episodes (Freaked me out). Been back in Texas a year and haven't been sick at all. Kids or not, being sick that much sucks.

I contracted tuberculosis in Korea. It's dormant. I was supposed to take a drug called INH for 6 months and never did.
Thinking about it.

If you're still latent, TB that is, you can be cured. What are you waiting for?

You probably know this, but anyway:

BTW, how did you find out?

After returning to the States from Korea in 1995 I took what I believe is called a TB tine test. The test where they poke your forearm and then observe the marking later.
I was found positive. The doctor said the TB was lying dormant in my system and could be come active if I didn't take the prescribed drugs for six months and then later developed an illness which attacked my immune system, for example; cancer.
I stopped taking the drugs because I'm an alcoholic and I didn't want to permanantly destroy my liver by mixing the drugs with alcohol. Of course if I don't strop drinking I'll also damage my liver.
So I'm currently trying not to drink and once I'm a full-fledged wagoneer, I'll go back to the hospital for the drugs.
Thanks for the link.

Pamela Anderson is pretty sure she'll die within the next 10 years due to Hep C.

On a side note, she says that Tommy Lee and Kid Rock will just have to share her if they want to be with her.** Don't think they'll mind.
