I married the mafia. Two sons of a godfather trick the hero into marrying their sister. I was told this movie was sold to hollywood. Its rumoured that Deniro will play the part of the godfather. |
Not true, but at the 1999 Asian Cinevision Asian/American Film festival, Robert Deniro rented the entire theater at Alice Tully Hall so he and his associates could watch that overrated fish: SHIRI.
Queen Latifahs' handlers have dibs on the American remake of MY WIFE IS A GANGSTER, however. Id take Shim Eu-kyeong, personally.

Personally I found it overrated. Watch the deluxe DVD and listen to the typically pretentious Korean kam-deok wax on how good his film works. Ugh. (I could tell you stories about the worst of the worst: Kim ji-woon a talented director of films like THE QUIET FAMILY and THE FOUL KING, and theres no doubt about it with is baseball hat and dark sunglasses trying to be Wong Kar-wei publicly and NEVER answering a question when asked directly. He and Hang Song-soo need their arses kicked and I personally told Kim he should stick to making movies instead of talking about them. His translator actually relayed my words and he let out a nervous laugh.)
Back to MY SASSY GIRL: its not bad, but average for a Korean comedy. It simply had a HUGE advertising push behind it and slipped in a few sly filmic references (Wong Kar-weis ASHES OF TIME, being one of them). Lets be honest though: I was in Hong Kong when I saw it in a theater in Mongkok and I cheered aloud when sexxxy babe vomited all over that ajossis head on the subway. Who hasnt wanted to do that???? For hours after that, my date (a local gal I met at festival walk) kept teasing me by breaking out into a dead-on impersonation of my cheer.
Little known facts;
FRIEND did well because it was one of the first net investment films. It was produced with funds raised from the general public via the net. As such, everybody and their friend pimped the film to their friends. You know the heard mentality... Its a decent film but not the best regarding Korean gangsters (try COME TO ME for an accurate, post civil war depiction of the average Korean gang-bei). Because they had average Joe investors and them pimping it they cut down on advertising overhead fast.
Two won,
Joe |

Few years ago there was a film about a family that starts an inn on a hiking trail out in the boonies, NK spy kills himself in on of their rooms and to cover it up they kill other people and then kill other people to cover up those killings...want to see it again and can't remember the title or who was in it.

yeah - THE QUIET FAMILY by Kim Ji-woon. He's a pretentious dude but his films are pretty good.
Takashi Miike did a musical variation of THE QUIET FAMILY that acknowledges its predecessor but also works as its own film, entitled THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS - and it's worth checking out. Bizarre!

i was blown away by the caliber of the English subtitle writing. ' wasn't surprised at all that it was translated by the Korean scholar, Kim, Yong Oak. |

Muchas gracias.
I used to have dreams that went a lot like that flick.
I'm sorry, my shrink encourages me to disclose that sort of thing but my lawyer disagrees...for legal reasons of course. |

Lots of good choices in here for you glowSgirl.
I would also recommend:
Attack the Gas Station (Hilarious)
Musa (Decent Epic)
Saving my Hubby (nice mix of comedy and drama)
I also really enjoyed Chingu (Friend) and Barking Dogs Never Bite. |

Chip-eu-ro (???) is wonderful. it is the story of an old woman and a young boy. the old woman is not an actor - just an old village woman. it is filmed in her real house. very touching, funny - a must see. shows how rude the young korean generation is.
another must see is -
Ch'ui-hwa-seon (???) - an historical story based on the life of an artist at the end of the Choseon dynasty - late 1800's. |
I agree this is by far the best flick. They even released in the states in theaters, but not sure how well it did. You can order the DVD in the states too. It really is the best movie. The English name is The Way Home. |
