I can't do it. I find it burns my calves too much. It's amazing how fast you lose your flexbilty. When I did competive trampoline I was reasonably flexbile. Now I can't even get into the splits or the sqat for the matter.
I agree with beaver. It does look silly though.

Are you talking about the "floor sitting" or the duck sqautting? I can do the duck squat, although not for very long. I find the circulation gets cut off to my lower legs if I do it for too long. Maybe I'm not doing it right though.
The floor sitting, no way! I can't do it. It's g^&*^^m painful. Maybe I'm not normal, but I have never been able to sit like that. (lotus position)

I like to squat like that sometimes when my back hurts. It really stretches the back muscles and provides instant relief. To a Westerner it might look a bit silly but in Korea it's normal so I don't mind doing it. That said, even Koreans don't squat like that anywhere. |

Martha Stewart, et al, would have a field day if she saw some of the disgusting manners Koreans have, including the squat!

Others have said it looks silly, which I can understand. I disagree, but understand that.
Why is the squat "disgusting"? |

I quite liked the squat when I first came to Korea.. particularly down in Busan where its perfected quite well. It became a habit of me to squat while waiting for buses or trains.. its really comfortable and much more relaxing than standing.
Still though, up here in Seoul.. it has a more peasant-like appearance to it.. so I don't feel comfortable doing that here..
Can't help but look forward to squat toilets though.. really cleans out the system!

I've noticed the same thing - I fall over backwards doing it.
Also, it's as uncomfortable as hell.
They do it in Thialand, Japan, Taiwan and Phils also. |

Martha Stewart isn't saying much more than "not guilty" these days. |

A lot of Koreans can't do the squat.
Have you seen all the new fatties lately?
I used to see (early 1990s) a lot more squatters, especially on the Seoul subway platforms and at Gimpo airport. Smoking and squatting seem to go together.
Has anyone noticed that Korean people like to smoke on the toilet? |
