I know the Koreans themselves are complaining about this, so I know it's not a "cultural confusion" on my part.

Put road signs where they belong; not 40 meters away from where they belong.

More street signs at intersections; because a person should be able to find out what street that is WITHOUT having to walk/drive 4 blocks to find the street sign. Even the Philippines have street signs.

And finally, romanize ALL the street signs. If some cities can do it, all cities can do it.

I'm suddenly in favor of this wacky canal idea...

Maybe it really isnt a bad idea.

Korea's good at manipulating the landscape & its kind of a legoland already. Punching a canal tunnel through a mountain -- no problem! Keeps a considerable bunch of laborers busy too.

Korea could end up with a world-class recreation corridor (alongside clean & efficient shipping).

Its not like theres a lot of pristine wilderness would be compromised. Its a small peninsula with a mega population. Why not think bold?

The canal idea is absolutely ridiculous. The voices of economists, environmentalists, university professors who oppose the plans are getting louder and louder.

I've been putting together a lot of information on the facebook group in the link below. Have a look at photo section as it includes loads of detail about why the grand canal is such a stupid idea.

The average depth of the Han and Nakdong rivers is 2-3 metres. They will be scraping out the bottom of these rivers to a depth of 6-9 metres and this, combined with widening of the rivers and the construction of locks, reservoirs, tacky tourist attractions and port facilities will turn these rivers into denuded trenches.

They want to turn this:

Into something capable of hosting this:

Please don't be fooled by the pretty video graphics from Arirang TV.
