Don't count on Canadians. Something like 70% of Canadian school kids think John Macdonald is Ronald McDonald's full name, not our first PM.

Quote:
Lady Astor: Mr. Churchill, you're drunk!

Winston Churchill: Yes, and you, Madam, are ugly. But tomorrow, I shall be sober.

I prefer the above quote, to the "shove it" one.

That's kind of the point of the satire: the witty Churchill making retorts worthy of a froth-blowing lager lout.

Nothing like the '70s Nat. Lampoon!

Moz:

I seem to recall you and I having a fond exchange of recollections about 70s Lampoon, back during your previous stint on this board. Good find, that Churchill piece. My all time favorite, though, would have to be their send-up of anti-semitic pamphlets, Let's Get America Out Of Dutch.

Ha, ha! Pretty off-topic, but ya: the 70s NL was classic stuff(PJ O'Rourke & co.).

Left, right, Republican, Democrat, white, black, Gentile, Jew...everything was fair game back in those days....

UKTV Gold television surveyed 3,000 people.

Haha. UKTV Gold. What kind of people sit at home watching that, and would bother to take part in one of their polls? Academics and busy professionals perhaps? Er, no. Only a quarter of layabout dole bludgers, schoolboy truants and bored immigrant housewifes thought Churchill was pretend? I'm surprised half the UK Gold viewers even knew who he was!

An example of a UKTV Gold viewer - the latest post on the UK Gold forum went:

But aren't these the elites of modern British society?

Funny, isn't it? When American education is put down, it's based on country-wide broad results/surveys. Put down Brit public education? Oh no, invalid based on the the source! Only toffy snots should be surveyed!

I remember walking our of a pub/club in Liverpool a few years back, and upon looking at the chaos in front of me, figured that this is what the apocalypse would look like.

Weird toothed "chavs" (which I take to mean the 60% of white Britain that is white-trash, in my estimation) noticing my tied shoe laces and that my shoes were not thin, white and narrow saying to me "what you looking at mate" and muttering other nonsense while drooling and puking on the street. It was quite the spectacle.

My friend was working as an engineer in a London firm. She began to notice the Brits love for drinking. At chrismas time the christmas party committee sent out an email soliciting ideas for drinking games, games designed to get as many people blind drunk as possible. And then she got some health survey. One of the questions was about how much you drink per day. She noted that the first choice "abstainer" was defined as 0-2 drinks a day. One can literally drink two pints of beer every day and be thought of as a non drinker.

Yeah, but did UK Gold only survey UK Gold viewers?

I just tried to google up an answer to that, but can't find any details. But looking on the UKTV Gold site I found:
Quote:
The research showed that the nation's under 20s are lacking the most when it comes to basic historical knowledge. Over one fifth (21%) thought Winston Churchill, arguably Britain's most famous Prime Minister, was a work of fiction, and over a quarter (27%) thought pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale was a mythical figure.

So the statistic quoted for Brits not knowing who Churchill was actually from a survery of teenagers. That would make more sense, though still surprising.
