Austin teacher... where have you failed when it comes to educating us on this board? The people here you're trying to impart your knowledge upon dislike you immensely. Even to the point where they wont even consider the possibilty that your arguments may have some validity to them.
Will you blame others for your failure to communicate your knowledge here, or will you be able to accurately evaluate yourself, and act accordingly? |

Now, getting back to the OP:
Yes, you are being unreasonable in your expectations. If they're broke, they have no money to give you. Suck it up and take the cash you do have and get the hell out of here. |

I'm new to this forum. I've taught in Korea before (returning soon) so I'm by no means a newfie (just a newfie to Dave's). Reading this thread is shocking to say the least.
To PJ, your situation sounds awful. I'm guessing here, but even if a school goes bankrupt, surely their insurers pick up the tab when they go bankrupt? Might be worth looking into that a little more.
Is Austin a recruiter? I just do not understand the vicious comments he's made. They seem to be protecting the school, not standing by a fellow teacher. |

I want to point out that the person who is being quoted by Austin in these examples never said the words that are highlighted as being quoted.
The quote function at Dave's ESL cafe serves a very useful function, and an honorable one. We can show people exactly what someone said, and then provide our reactions to it. To put a paraphrase inside a quote is, I think, pretty dispicable because it tries to tell people that your perception of what a person is actually and truely what they said.
But it is not. Austin, by using this tactic you are trying to pass your own words off as someone else's and at the same time trying to add weight to their words by putting them in the mouth of the person you oppose.
Don't do it anymore,Austin. It's not honest, and it's not fair. I urge everyone, and I want to do my level best to persuade others at this time not to abuse the facilities we have at this forum in this way.
Paraphrasing is cool, it's fine and it's something anyone can do - but DON'T use the quote function to try and pass off your own words as someone else's so that the you can debate the paraphrase rather than what someone actually said. |

New here? Then do yourself a favour and ignore Austin's posts- even when they're informative they'll leave you wishing you hadn't read them. |

Think I just learnt a quick lesson. Thanks Bulsajo. Any other weirdos I need to keep clear of?
If Austin is so well known (recruiter?) why is he allowed to be here in the first place? |

not to be nitpicky about something i'm only about 80% sure of myself, but i think you meant 'newbie', meaning a person who is new, rather than 'newfie' which is someone from newfoundland.
i only brought it up because ms pitstop was giving me static for not knowing how to do multiple quotes in another thread. |

It sucks you know.
Both of you bickering women are right.
A teacher can teach english very well, but with kids, sometimes it comes down to a popularity contest. If they come home everyday and tell their parents that their teacher sucks (true or not), the kid will be pulled out of the hagwon.
I don't blame myself ever when a young student doesn't learn english. It's their total lack of motivation.
My 1st hagwon went bankrupt. I don't blame myself. The management was poor and Ilsan is far too diluted with hagwons. The curriculum sucks and so on and so forth.
Sometimes I have to play some games and stuff, I know. I have to make english semi-interesting, as well as teaching it well. I find it a tough balance to make. IMHO I am a good teacher but I have a lot to learn still. |

Austin,
I like some of your point of views but kicking a man when he is down seems to be your specialty.
I hope everybody kicks the crap out of you when times get tough because one thing I hate in condescending know-it-alls.
In response to the OP, you are not entitled to your momey. You have to finish one year for a bonus. I think it is a touch unreasonable to demand it, especially if he pays you everything that is owed but I wish the best of luck to you.
By the way, the idea of this board is to be informative, not a general pain-in-the-butt. i think you are going for a banning Austin. i'm not a mod but the flame wars you ignite are somethibg that aren't really welcome by anyone here, everyone can vent sure and I appreciate different points of opinion but i think you are doing it just to get a reaction

Me, too!
I will certainly welcome the beating when I have it coming...lol.
Thanks,
Austin
BTW, I resent your suggestion that I should be banned from this site. I never have used inappropriate language or been verbally abusive to any person on this site. On this thread, I merely pointed out that PJ has a history, as we all do.
Do you take what people post at face value, or do you try to determine how their personality/character has colored their experience?
Can we be honest here?
If his employer truly thought PJ was an "excellent" teacher, why would his boss have fired him?
Sorry, but in Korea, as I have stated many times before, people dislike conflicts. They will avoid them at all costs.
It is unfortunate that you are unable to see the point of my comments, as
I was simply attempting to point out that sometimes things are not what they seem to be here. As such, his boss might very well have been buttering him up with the hopes of avoiding further conflict. |

The response:
| Austin in a PM to me wrote: |
You know I post more for my own benefit than I do for that of others.
People can ignore what I write or take it to heart. That is their deal. Once I press send, it is out of my hands. |
I think it's safe to say that Austin is blaming others for his inability to post advice here without causing a shit storm by treating everyone like garbage.
I feel that we can safely conclude that Austin is a bad teacher, for he is unable to effectively communicate the information he has.
I see two possibilities here when it comes to Austin's failures:
1) He knows exactly what sort of respose he'll get from his posts, and he does it purposely. This makes him a long-running and successful troll. His reply above hints at this.
2) His ego blinds him to any possibilty of a problem on his end of the exchange. Considering his typical post runs along the lines of "Your crappy white-boy ego the source of all your problems. Get rid of it." This makes him a hypocrite and anything he posts worthless.
Regardless, he always winds up being the cause of more troubles than contributions to the board.
Let us ask ourselves: What exactly is his "own benefit" that he posts for? To stroke his ego, or to troll?
Ladies and gentlemen, mods of all ages, I feel that you know the answer to this problem: A long walk off of a short pier. |

I have no idea about the current topic except to say get every penny you can, if you can, which is unlikely.
However, after reading this board extensively for the last month I wish to table a motion: Austin's nick should be changed to 'St Austin', for he is holier than thou.
He could be patron saint of trolls, perhaps?
