The leftist/european dig was directed as a troll at Jurgen. Otherwise, I'm perfectly willing to accept the large number of "moderate" muslims but I on the other hand know that the threat of violence from obedient muslims keeps their mouths shut, by in large.
If you talk out, you are at risk of death. The moderates are neutered and it doesn't not help us at all to pretend that they at all matter. |

If you tallied up all the atrocities committed by the DPRK, over the past 20 years, & compared them, to those by the US, guess which one comes out looking far, far, worse. Hint: It isn't the US.
Yes, the US isn't perfect, but the alternatives are either:
* China
* Russia
* Islamic States
None of the above are viable alternatives, for 'world policeman', at this stage. China has been smart, & largely minded it's own business.
The United Nations has it's flaws, but is better than nothing, imho, particularly in cases like Rwanda in 1992, when the US & EU largely stood by & did nothing, because their strategic interests were unaffected. Or food aid in times of famine, in the DPRK. The Sunshine Policy, & the 6 country dialogue talks, on nuclear disarmament, seem to be more effective, than the continued mess in Iraq, as a comparison. Slow, yes, but probably more effective in the long run.
If the Democrats do get returned to power in the US, perhaps they will reinstate a lot of the foreign policy inititiatives, scrapped & repealed by the Orwellian Bush Administration?
'the peel': Thanks for the kool aid / neocon tip! |

My personal policy is to not harp on the NK issue with Koreans. I have my own opinions (bad) about the north, but Korea has had such a totally schizophrenic history that I feel like I am pouring salt on their collective wounds by bringing it up.
Some Koreans here are willing to talk about it, and that is fine with me if they want to bring it up, but otherwise I keep in mind I don't work for Amnesty Int'l and as an American I am probably not the best person to raise the issue. Too much historical muddy water between the nations.
This is one reason Dave's cafe provides a positive service for folks like me. I come here to talk shit about stuff like this instead of possibly (and inadvertently) pissing off the locals.

| The need to look at one's self is vital but doesn't negate looking at others either. Suggesting one must be perfect before critiqueing others is childish. Trying to draw any kind of equivilancy between North Korea and the USA is not just misleading, not just disengenuous, it's obscene. |

I agree completely, but I'd rather make the point here on this forum (for venting purposes) and more importantly also support my own government's effort to make a change up north as opposed to making it into a dinner conversation topic with Koreans who would probably just rather enjoy their meal.
That was my only point. There's frankly not much we can directly do regarding SK gov't policy. |

| Who is good, bad, or worse discussions generally do not lead anywhere helpful. What purposes do such discussions serve, incidentally? |

Gopher, I would say that on this forum such discussions serve very little purpose.
Just grist for the mill, I suppose. |

A little introspection never hurt anyone.
