Since December, Prince Harry had served in a line unit in Afghanistan. Some reports even put him in direct combat against the Taliban. As of this week, he is being sent back to the UK for fear that the media leak would not only threaten his life (being third in line for the throne) but also the lives of the men he leads....
I have deep respect for any royal who can get off their ass and do their duty for 'queen and country'.
The last time a report came out of a royal engaging in combat was during the Falkland Wars (1982) when Prince Andrew flew helicopter missions in support of his fleet while in the Navy (I tried to Wiki it, but found scant info on his contributions there)....does anyone have anymore info on that?
For the Royalists on this board, or Brits in general, what is your opinion of one of the royal family serving in combat? (especially one known for hard partying).... |
It's normal, and traditional, for Royals to serve in the military, even in combat zones, as part of their education. I don't think they normally take part in actual combat for obvious reasons, but they go through the full treatment as far as possible. (I heard a rumour that one of them - Prince Andrew, or possibly Prince Edward - might have disgraced themselves at one time but such things are usually kept quiet).
Personally I do respect the royal family for serving in combat and for the generally disciplined life of service to their country they (mostly) lead. But that doesn't change the fact that it's an institution with little use so I'm not a royalist.
P.S. Hard partying doesn't have anything to do with it. Soldiers aren't puritans.
P.P.S. I don't know much more about Prince Edward and whatever he did because I don't follow royal family news. |

| Privateer, it does seem like an outdated thing to do. National Service ended in Britain in 1960. Many British citizens would love to see it re-introduced but it's hardly likely. Seems strange that the Royal Family still indulges in such traditional activities. Actually not really, considering they still go hunting. They're living in the past. |

Prince Harry would make a fine King!
And regardless of how you feel about him, it is not our decision to make.
He is entitled to be King if his father and older brother are unable to become so.
It is his birth right.
The Monarch is not accountable to us.
We are not the Monarch's constituants. We did not vote for the Monarch.
Instead, the Monarch is our ruler.
And we are the Monarch's subjects.
So we own our allegiance, loyalty and life to the Monarch.
The Monarch is our ruler. We are the Monarch's subjects.
The Monarch "is" England and the British Empire.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!

I agree....
I am not slamming him for his partying, that might actually make him seem more in touch with the 'common bloke'
I thought it was awesome he is doing his part for 'crown and country'.
Which is why I also mentioned Prince Andrews....there were some rumors flying that he did some heroic stuff during the Falkland Wars of '82, I just want to know if they are true or not....I know that there are some in the ESL world who served 'the crown' in HH Royal Military, so someone might have some info on that.....which I do find to be more professional that the political mess the 'former colonial' military has become, thanx to Herr Busche |
