ipods are made with the life expectancy of a hamster
also they make sure to come out with new models every year, so there is a newer, better, cooler one by the time your old one breaks down

If you're sure it's a hard drive issue, you might attempt to reseat the cable. I had my go south a couple of years ago. I simply opened it, reseated the cable, and wham good as new. I've had no issues since, and even after 3 years the battery is still good.

Note: You should be comfortable opening your iPod before attempting this though.

Open the iPod, take a folded business card and place it between the battery and the hard drive. Then, put the casing back on and try to boot it a few times using the hard reset. Might work for you, worked for me.
