| I'm giving a China a try in a few years time (me thinks). If it doesn't pan out, I'll be back. That simple. |

Of course HK & Macau are SARs. I said they are DE FACTO independent entities. I wouldn't want a newb to get the impression that a teaching job on the mainland is comparable to one in Taiwan or HK.
If you think Macau, for example, is "part" of China...then obviously you've never had a two hour wait in immigration going from Zhuhai to Macau(or vice versa).
And did you say the Chinese are "taking back their culture"??!! Is that why the CCP knocked down all those old districts in Beijing for the Olympics? |
Turn on the Tv at any time in China and see lectures about Laozi, Kongzi, Taoism etc etc. Hagwons are popping up everywhere to teach traditional Chinese philosophy etc. I think its pretty refreshing after everything that has happened. |

I visited Vietnam a few years back, and loved many things about Vietnamese architecture, vibe, etc. But the Vietnamese people were a major drawback. They seemed to intentionally try to get under your skin. But still, I found HCMC/Saigon really intriguing.
China, in comparison to Vietnam anyways, felt a lot more laid-back. But China also reminds me a lot of Korea in way too many ways.
Still I think SHANGHAI would be my first choice of both countries. Probably SAIGON as #2. Shanghai looks really cool whenever I see snippets of it from any kind of TV program. |

China Sucks - I've only traveled there, haven't lived or worked there but it is with out a doubt the most difficult place to be a tourist that I have ever encountered. Usually (in other Asian/Latin American/3rd world countries) when you let people know that your on to their scam they give it up and move on or act more reasonably. In China when you point out that you know there trying to rip you off they get angry (they've lost face) and just won't let it go. So many encounters with real aholes! In far western Tibet I was eating at a Han owned restaurant with some Tibetan friends - when we got up to leave the Tibetans poured beer into all the plates with little bits of leftover food - They said "so that they don't try and serve the food to someone else". Another time in a Muslim Chinese joint in rural China I was served burnt rice (which is so unbelievably rude) and they tried to charge me $100 usd for a meal for two.
Anyway, there are of course a lot of incredible things to see in China, delicious food, beautiful people, and 5,000 years of culture. I'm sure there are many amicable folks but as somebody once said "Money is the Chinese God" - note the uniquely fat Buddha.
I'm thinking about heading to Vietnam after Korea. I love Viet food, tropical weather and fruit. I was looking at pictures of rock climbing in Halong Bay earlier today.
I would have gone to Taiwan instead of Korea but the pay isn't as good. I've heard its way more chill and cosmopolitan than the mainland - Taiwan is definitely on my list. Khaohsiung, in the south, is supposed to be the best place in the world to eat sushi - they supply Japan with most of their fatty tuna. |

China is a country with 1.3 billion people. Generalizations usually fail. There are a LOT of places in China that do suck. I highly doubt you've seen enough of the country to make a broad judgment: or else you'd know not to make a broad judgment.
Beijing and Shanghai are like two different worlds, and they are both East Coast cities! Xinjiang is a totally different animal, and Dongbei is its own world as well. |

That is probably the best quote concerning anything about China. |

Dalian looks like a nice place to live and work.
Honestly I would pick China just because of the usefulness of learning the Chinese language... but you could also teach in Hong Kong, Singapore, or Taiwan for that purpose. |

I've lived and worked in both - the pay is good in both countries due to the low cost of living and lax laws. While Vietnam is a great country to visit, it is not good to live in.
China is great but it depends where you are in China as every place is obviously different. Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province are good places to work in. It pays to do a lot of research before moving to China. |
