Sahm gyap sal? Heart attack on a platter.
However, kalbi is divine. (Admittedly the restaurant's marinade recipe makes a big difference.) |

Where are you eating? Every place I go, galbi and sam gyup are exactly the price.
As for the special occasion thing, depends on other factors of the joint. You can have sam gyup in a swank Myeongdong or Gangnam restaurant and you might even be able to order international wines to go with it (and pay as much as 15 or 20,000 per head) or you can go to one of a couple of places I know near Daebang Stn that have been having a price war and selling it down at 2,000 won (for smaller thannormal portions, and not such quality meat).
I'm with the beav, it's far too philosophical a querstion for the likes of us, and yata's right, you have to be in the mood for a lot of grease in your face if you go for the 3-layer slices ... |

Most places I've gone, the Samgyupsal has been cheaper than Galbi.
Also, there are places you can find where you can get Samgyupsal for less than 5,000w per serving. These are the places that don't give you anything except the meat, garlic, Soju, and the lettuce. No banchan, no nothing.
There are different kinds of Samgyupsal too. The frozen is cheap but the "fresh" will be expensive. Also, you have galbi, Wong galbi, and Beef Galbi. Regular galbi will be cheap. If I go and I want galbi, I never get anything less than the Wong Galbi. |

I vote sam gyeop sal, but of course not all are created equally. I like it thick, and usually trim off most of the fat before eating. It's gotta be on a stone, too. Fry that garlic!
Now, let's not forget about the sides; quality greens (got to - GOT TO, I tells ya - have the sesame leaf!), good sour kimchi, the ssamjang can't be too mealy, spicy (not fishy) dwenjang chigae... ah, heaven.
Problem is: my social circle is depressingly small, and hardly anyone shares my passion for sam gyeop sal. It's become a somewhat rare treat. :_( |

Another vote for samgyeopsal.
Nothing like some nice thick cut slabs of samgyeopsal on one of those tilted plates with kimchi at the bottom, loads of garlic, some tofu, mushrooms and onions up the top, cider during the meal and some naengmyeon at the end to cleanse the mouth and stomach, with a few cigarettes along the way. |

You should never trim of the fat. That's the best part. I like the fat skin combination of Ogyupsal |
