It's not really obscure, but I really love WALK by Pantera.

Slightly off topic, but if you are ever in Shinchon, there's a little metal bar called "Judas or Sabbath". The owner is a cool guy and he takes all requests. He's got a projector and he'll play anything you can find on Youtube.

"The Shrine" by King Diamond will knock you off your stool. Also,Sevendust "Licking Cream" Check out Puya (Latin Metal). Or the funniest heaviest stuff I've ever heard, (I'm 50) Travis Shredd and The Good Ole' Homeboys. They play country ,metal, rap. Unbelievable. Tell me what you think.............. also, Bound by Disturbed

Did you ever see Repo man. Suicidal Tendencies is hardcore punk. I like the way the song institutionalionlized builds up. Kinda like a temper tantram.

"Left Hand Black" by Danzig, pretty much the beginning and the end of Heavy Metal. Still blows me away.

Glenn channelled Orbison, Morrison, and Astbury with killer chords and power drumming.

Dope, (hed)PE, Disturbed, RATM, Slipknot, Pearl Jam, Seether, Nirvana, Korn, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Mudvayne, Marilyn Manson, Breaking Benjamin, Godsmack, .......

The songs that just got me hooked were..

Slipknot / "wait and bleed"
- I was standing in front of tower records and heard this song, I walked in and asked them for the CD and just bought it right then and there.

Disturbed / "Voices"
- 'nuff said.

Dope / "Now or Never"
- can't remember when the last time I loved a song so much was.

Metallica / "For Whom The Bells Toll"
- took one look at the cover, and bought it.

Limp Bizkit / "counterfeit"
- I got up from my seat at a heavy metal bar, and asked what this song was, I left and got the CD.

Pearl Jam / "Jeremy"
- MTV played this song, and I thought... nothing. Jeremy speaking in class was all I could think of.

I love heavy metal/grunge/nu metal/rock..

I've always thought of Hardcore/Grindcore of being a little bit punk, a little bit metal. I can't tell the difference between some "grindcore" and some "speed metal" bands. Besides, Faith No More was a "metal" band, but they weren't always that metal, Mr. Bungle seemed WAY more metal.

As far as straight metal, have you listened to FANTOMAS? My friends and I listened to that excessively in college, but the kids I've met recently have never heard of it. The cover of 'Rosemary's Baby' is freaking transcendent.

Also, if you've never listened to Blood Brothers do so.

i think that you're moving a bit too far beyond "metal". trying to call mr. bungle "metal" is like trying to call DEVO rock and roll.

one thing about metal is that it is aesthetically restrictive. extremely conservative. perhaps the most conservative rock and roll genre in history, as far as sound, attire, presentation... and so many others.

FANTOMAS, while very intriguing, and featuring DUDES FROM METAL BANDS, are not a metal band.

mr. bungle, while very intriguing, and featuring THAT DUDE FROM THAT BAND THAT HAD THAT GUITARIST WHO LOOKED LIKE A METAL DUDE BUT THEN LEFT WHEN HE FOUND OUT THE KEYBOARD PLAYER WAS A RAGING HOMOSEXUAL, are not a metal band.

i would argue that those two bands have more in common with capt. beefheart than any metal band.

with that said, my favorite metal band is chicago's TROUBLE.

i am also fond of PENTAGRAM, who have never had a decent recording, and that is part of their charm.

and to clarify, since it's annoying me - by "blood brothers" do you mean that band from seattle that sounds like 14 year old girls fighting in a mall, or the song by iron maiden?

one is metal, the other one is a reason to neuter anyone who says "dude, that's metal". please inform.

I'm just going by songs, man. I've never understood why FNM was called a metal band. I love the band, but I never got the genre classification.

And I'm not a huge metal fan, but I'm not a complete philistine either. FANTOMAS is pretty damn metal. More metal than most eighties metal. You're right about metal fans wanting clear distinctions and not being big fans of things outside there comfort zone, at least in my experience, but there are a lot of ________ metal genres. Speed, hair, power, etc. I don't think it's as limiting as you present, but, yeah, speed metal guys pretty much like speed metal and think power metal is crap, etc.

apart from appearing on the covers of a few metal magazines who wanted to make money, i'm not sure i've ever heard FNM referred to as "metal" without some serious caveats attached.

When I ran a college radio station's music department they charted on CMJ's metal chart. The 40 year old guy that was a massive metal head and kept taking one class a semester so he could keep doing his metal show, going on 15 years, called them a metal band. That guy kept going to college for metal. THAT is METAL.

As far as the Blood Brothers are concerned, neuter away. I've never seen much difference between grindcore and speed/thrash metal.

blood brothers grindcore? are we talking about the same band? no self-respecting metal band would have a song called "meet me at the waterfront after the social". it just wouldn't happen.
