I'd study.
I wonder what the people he works with think of him. I'm reminded of that speech Ben Affleck made to Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting, "If you're still working here I'll kick your ass....You're sitting on a golden ticket and that's bullshit."
If you can't think of anything better to do with your life than work at MacDonald's then ... then give the money to me! |

Study?
Actually working at McDonalds would be cool. You really wouldn't worry about your paycheck and you could do things you wouldn't normally do and talk to people all day.
I'd end up being fired, no doubt. Then I would move on to other jobs where I would get fired. Because I wouldn't care. Probably I'd shout at the boss and fight for employee rights and ask him/her direct, taboo questions about certain things pertaining to my co-workers, etc. |

I saw a story about a guy in Wales who won a million dollars but continues to work at McDonald's. Would you keep working if you won a million bucks?
EDIT: The guy won just over 2 million, quit his job, but then went back. He works there now and he won the money 18 months ago. |
Are you saying the ESL industry is like Mc'Donalds! Screw you
Would you like English with that |

I would have to say yes. After you buy yourself the standard toys, a new house (say $300K) plus a new car (say $50K) and then some of the cash you might divvy out among family ($100K), and then say you take a year off of work ($50K), you're probably going to have $500K in the bank. Well, there's your retirement. You won't have to worry about THAT.
I just bought a GIC that pays 3.6% interest. On a million, that's $36,000 a year. That's not going to provide you a comfy life save for living in the country side. |

Exactly right. A million is a start, but its not enough to get comfortable.
I'd try to find someone with good ideas to expand my money. A million would be great cash flow to start up a small business. Since I'm young, running that business would become my life. |

Buy a family home freehold then buy two property rentals. Still go to work. Would be all securely set up not to have to worry about employment woes if you decide to hate work and having sufficient living income if you pull out of the rat race for a while.
PS: An acquaitance got 2 million as a legacy. He bought a decent house but the rest of it went on lifestyle - clubs, hotspot travel, coke, designer stuff ...
In a way he is set up, with the house and all, but what an opportunity to set up for life completely.

Every time I hear a story like this, I'm reminded of my high school Lit teacher. About two months before he was due to retire, he won $400,000. He didn't quit because he'd have to forfeit his entire pension if he did. Instead, he spent the last two months talking leaning back in his chair, feet on the desk, firing chalk at any student who annoyed him. By June, his aim was astonishingly good.
I suspect that the mere idea that you don't *need* the job to put food on the table, and the freedom to quit at any moment, would make even the worst job much easier to take, and if not, you can always throw stuff.
I'd keep working, though probably not at my current job |

No way! No job is that fun. I'd spend my life living off the interest and traveling to every place I've ever wanted to go....and of course, I'd buy myself a nice house or two. And one for my Mom and Dad.
I'd also pursue hobbies more, 'cause I wouldn't be so darn tired from working. |

1,000,000 , aren't we all already multi millionaires each month?
I would continue working for at least 3months after having invested the money so that after that 3 months i was sick of the job i could quit and have the interest as spending money therefore as long as you don't buy big luxuary things right away you will have the orginal capital mostly in tact -
Oh just though of important question - is this american dollars?
Also some posters are right buy a house etc... seriously dents your capital to base interest revenue on.
My motto is "at the moment i work for money, i would perfer it the other way round, as soon as that can happen Sorted."

| I don't consider a million to be a lot, so yea, I'd keep working for a bit. 5 million is probably the minimum with which I'd consider quitting my nonexistent job. After my obligatory spending spree, I figure I'd be left with around 3 million, 1 million of which I'd give to my parents, leaving me with around 2 mill, half of which I'd invest in a hedge fund while keeping the other half in more secure investments. |

| Considering that 36,000 in interest per year is more than I'm currently making HELL YES I would quit my job. It's not a ton of money, but I'd be comfortable with it. |

stop working right away at least for a few years, smoke mountains of opium (or convenient derivative), drink lots of scotch, explore my many perversions and then finally, when the dosh ran out thanks to my lifestyle, write a long and rambling suicide note (claiming martyrdom) and do the honors.

Why not? Save a decent sum of money every month, invest it wisely and let compound interest do the rest.
I don't have the articles bookmarked on this computer, but from what I've read from financial experts, if you invest around $700/month starting from when you're 35, you can have a million by the time you retire. If you start at 25 years of age you only need to save a little more than half that amount.
There may be other factors I'm not aware of, but from what I've read a million on our salaries is do-able. |

| I'd probably blow it all by getting wasted and making low-grade porno flicks. Either that or I'd open a small wine-store in the suburbs of London. Haven't decided yet. |
