I've found that reading the posts on this site too often leaves me bitter and angry... Very few of the posts say anything positive....it's most whining about small things...

I need to get out more... Surprised

I had a dream about Matko's avatar. That's silly and it's worryng. Sad I don't know Matko.

Your girlfriend is right. I sometimes find myself posting and reading here, and putting off writing to my friends and family back home. That's nuts.

You know I felt this same way when the old Dave's format was used (the blue hyperlinks marking every single post made). Maybe things just look "cheerier" now, or I've posted more and got to know some people thru posts and others thru the get-togethers, but this board doesn't give me the sense of anxiety that it used to. Thank God for that.

I seem to be spending too much time on dave's here according to her. I feel i spend a lot but not too much.
she gets frustrated on sunny beautiful days like this when spend 45mins on the computer on the INTERNET and 2x figuring out our new computer (that has korean windows xp...totally unfamiliar)

If she says it's too much then it probably is too much.

In fact, here is a discount assault rifle dealer, call for bulk rates and they will ship directly to an FFL

I only use the internet to buy new toys, look at porn, and get new songs....the rest is all filler while I wait for the above.

Pure brain candy.

Yeah, good point. I look at this site almost exclusively at work, but I find that it, and all the obsessive international affairs reading I do on the web (what the hell for I'm not quite sure anymore ) drain me of time and energy and also keep me from looking very closely at my own life.

I think that a lot of us expats, especially those like me who have kind of ended up being longterm here by accident (I came here in 97 as a springboard to Russia - well, I didn't bounce very far) are in a similar situation to me. Here you are, 30 something if you're like me, working at a job that gives you ludicrous amounts of free unstructured time and almost no accountability whatsoever , and living in a land you like but feel ambiguous towards. You know in the back of your mind that you will be leaving at some point, and so you are afraid of putting down deep roots. You aren't getting younger and your future life back home seems foggier the closer you look at it, and so the temptation is to look away, to simply drift along with the tide. So you go to your office, with these half acknowledged fears and doubts and dilemnas crowding the back of your mind, and then here is this magic box. A hunk of plastic sitting on your desk that is a portal to never ending coffee chat and God's own periodicals library.

Ahh, there, to forget the nagging wife, the dusty pile of uncorrected assignments, the fears for your children's education next year, the planning where you don't know what to put first what last and where to start. Instead to soar in the pure ether. For a moment or two at least to forget your actual ineffectualness and emasculation in an alien culture and feel the will to power, if only in meandering debates that end up inevitably being no more than mutual intellectual m asturbation. My fetish- the thing that gets me off- happens to be international affairs but in terms of the impact on my life and it what it does for me psychologically it may as well be stamp collecting or wrestling.

Quote:
"No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous,
Almost, at times, the Fool.

I grow old... I grow old...
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.

Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think they will sing to me.

I have seen them riding seaward on the waves,
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea,
By sea-girls wreathed in seaweed, red and brown,
Till human voices wake us, and we drown."

To measure life not with coffee spoons but with post counts, and yet to grow bald just the same. "In the room the women come and go....." but what do they say? I don't know. I'm not even listening anymore. I hear only the sound of the cpu fan and the creaking of my office chair.

So what does this all mean? It means I think that the poster who suggested a two week break at least is right. For myself, I will never give up this portal, but a little reckoning is in order. I will take the two week cure.
