We should get alot more than free s*it housing for coming all the way from the other side of the world to work in their s*it schools with the rude students, they are getting worse swear to God, and so is their english |

I also went to korea with an open mind. I did have high expectations of koreans especially coming from Hawaii where we have the highest Asian population in the U.S.
Over the years I have met hundreds and hundreds of koreans around the world and it was always a good experience.
You go shopping in most any store and you'll see korean made goods, clothes, etc. and I suppose many people are thinking,"korea is doing well, koreans are making progress, advancements, etc. and when we visit a korean restaurant in the U.S. or Canada or France, the service was great, food great, etc. But then, went to korea and after a few weeks in country I'm thinking WTF!!! This is not the way I seen koreans behave back home! I never experienced contract problems back home with koreans etc.
so why are they so different when they leave korea?
It's a stark contrast from what I was used to seeing from koreans in other countries. The same with being so cheap to buy copy paper, pencils, books, etc... yet the owners always have money for soju nights! Red light district nights. Singing room nights.
But to be fair, I know of many teachers who work at great hokwons where the owners are outstanding and treat their teachers like kings. It's a hit or miss thing in korea and has a lot to do with your personality and theirs; either you click or you don't.

Great point. If you click with your wonjang then it makes the year a lot easier.
However, in some cases that does mean sucking up a little but there is a limit to how much one must suck up to gain face. |

this was a great point, but the years i have been here it was mostly miss not hit, even the school i really liked, they would do stuff to piss me off.
Like I had minor surgery and couldnt go to work for a few days, and they took it off my pay I was ripping mad since the other teacher there would call in sick because he was still drunk from the night before and they would "forget" to deduct it from his pay.
Even after I showed them the korean labor law stating that workers get one day off a month for being sick, they didnt care, I said these are the only days I missed the year, and they said we arent paying u for those days and if u dont shut up about it we'll fire u.
I said well i guess I have to go to the labor board and immigration to report this, and they said go ahead, we'll still fire u if we get a call or visit from them. I was like WTF, u guys are as*holes, and basically they said tough sh*t |

hellofaniceguy,
I see your point. However, have you ever run a business in your life (as the owner)?
Kristoy,
Just because you have had bad experiences here it does not justify you in making these demeaning comments about an entire country and its people.
Also, you seem to say that you have been here a for a while. That implies that you must have had a few jobs here. This in turn implies that if it has been mostly "miss" as you say, then a portion of the "missing" must have been because of you.
One person cannot be always right while the rest is always wrong.
Thats simple logic.[/quote] |

it does justify it. who are u judge judy? I can make whatever comments I wish, truth hurts and the truth about korea is that it sucks, the business people are crooks and the people are well, not that bright or nice. Most of them are on the fence between savages and actually people. U can imply .....(assume cough cough) anything u like but the bottom line is that the schools ive been to were "miss" because this country has no idea how to manage a business, and there's no way they'll ever learn how to mange people. It was miss because korea doesnt have any good hagwons. |

You wanna be careful joking on this thread - some people have got the right arse over things without justification - or maybe it is just that they don't have a sense of humour!! |

Except for the not buying supplies part, he sounds like someone I would respect. I've recently acquired a new hero, Ingvar Kamprad the founder of IKEA. The guy is worth billions but is still frugal. He drives a 10 year old Volvo (drives himself) and only flies coach. His friends joke that if he takes a Coke from the hotel room mini-bar he'll more than likely go out to a local convenience store to buy another Coke to replace it rather than paying the hotel charge. That's the way I would be if I had billions. Hopefully I'll have a chance to prove it. |

Yeah I enjoyed that book. Didn't learn much though since I was already stingy, just gave some more motivation and inspiration.
It amuses me to watch my coworkers spend money so freely and then complain one week before payday that they cant afford to go out for pizza. They know how much my wife and I save a month and can't believe I am still so cheap. I don't mind. I wear the label 'cheap' as a badge of honor (and thankfully my wife does too). |

I dunno, man. I've seen some pretty cheap 'foreigners', as well. Today the other foreign teacher surprised everyone and quit on the spot, suddenly. I was shocked. But the Korean teacher beside me said it was coming because there had been 'a lot of (so many!) complaints'. I said 'what?', because he seemed very sensible, upbeat and popular. She said that with the elementary students he sometimes did nothing all class. Just lay forward on the desk with his head in his hands. Sounds funny, downright hilarious as I write this. I would never have expected that from him. I wouldn't behave like that because the kids would eat me alive and gnaw my bones like ravenous mousquitoes, in my opinion.
But back to foreigners being 'cheap'. I'm not sure if what the Korean teacher said is true, or what's true. But I heard he was asking for the cash equivalent of a month's rent for the next month. Which seems rather odd to everyone since he was quitting then and there.
Life sure is interesting sometimes, the comings and goings. |
