| That wasn't interesting at all , it was just plain stupid. Westerners fail Korea ? What prerogative do we have to serve Korea ? |
How does one measure if Westerners are succeeding or failing? What about the hagwon owners and public schools? From what I've seen, Korean students are not learning as much as English as they should, and it is not because there aren't enough dedicated foreigners at the hagwons and public schools, because there are plenty who want to help the kids learn English. Sometimes, they don't have a curriculum, sometimes they do midnight runs, because they are not paid or are exploited, or sometimes the public schools are not supporting their teachers enough. That is not our fault. That is the fault of the system. Anyway, Steve was teaching in Thailand before coming to Korea. Steve writes very well, but his piece is more of an unbalanced hit-piece against foreigners and romanticizes Asian culture. He should use his skills to write something better rather than a trashy piece like that. |
AHA! Now that's where I know him from! Yeah I knew I had known of him before somewhere. Trust me the crowd on the ajarn forum have about the same opinion of him. Apparently some of the regulars there also have quite a bit of funny information about him also.
I taught in Thailand for a year and it was a joke and then some. Steve is the typical reason why i enjoy being the only NET at my school. |

Why do they put these people in the paper? There are already enough people making dumb generalizations on both sides, why not give voice to someone willing to look at things objectively and not resort to negativity, accusations and/or such pathetically simplistic absolutes as 'foreigners are failing in Korea'?
That said, how can anyone possibly expect to invite people of different ethnicities into their country and expect said ethnicity's influence to remain selective and controllable? You can't bring someone into your country, then tell them not to act like themselves. You can't pick and choose those parts of a person that you like and get rid of the rest. People are people, and they will have an influence. How you react to that influence is up to you, but generally, being afraid is never a good thing, and only tends to breed negativity, resentment, and other irrational mindsets.
'Foreign' influence on domestic cultures can have extremely positive influence-- look at American pop culture!!! Without the African influence, there's no way that American culture would be as hugely influential as it is today. For that matter, look at the Beatles. Or Star Wars-- made after examining the archetypes present in all myths around the world.
I just can't understand how someone could argue that fear, mistrust, and resistance to new ideas constitutes a culture. That's one of the driving forces behind the absurd amounts of narcissism you see here-- it isn't even really self-love, more like someone so afraid of ever knowing other people that they're unable to even see past themselves, and have no choice but to constantly re-examine themselves over and over, never really knowing what they're missing out on, and convincing themselves it's not worth it anyway.
Sorry for the rant. |

The MOD's felt it necessary to banish the original thread to Current Events (lower reader visits). The result? Five new threads popping up in General Discussion on the same topic. Have these threads been shuffled to the Current Events forum? . . . . .
Brilliant thinking. |
