To the OP - I was in your situation many times in Korea. As an yingwenlaoshi, you really should be in China, where I am.

I make 9000RMB a month at an easy job teaching adults, 25 hours a week. Now, you may think that this money is peanuts but lamb kebabs, bowls of noodles, dumplings (real noodles and dumplings, not that poo they sell in Korea) all cost about 5RMB, one's cash tends to go a lot further.

Six-packs of beer from the store are 12RMB, and of course you then have the Chinese that will take you out and pay for everything because it gives them face to be seen with a foreigner, like the hot 21 year-old that took me out for lamb and beef hot pot earlier tonight.

If I want to splurge, I can go to the German-owned bakery 5 minutes away and buy real sandwiches with a drink for 20RMB, or to the Cantonese joint near my place, or to the Aussie bar around the corner for decent pies, or to the Italian-owned restaurant a ten-minute walk away, all of which serve more authentic 'ethnic' cuisine than that found in Korea for a fraction of the price.

Will I leave China with a lot of money? Highly unlikely. I didn't leave Korea with a lot of money, but at least in China I can live like a king, juggle a ton of girlfriends, and not put up with blatant racism and xenophobia, and learn a language that is not only fun but actually useful in the scheme of things.

My final advice? Take your last paycheck like I did and head to China. I recommend cities in Jiangsu or Zhejiang province. Tons of jobs, safe, and a decent standard of living. Good luck with your plight nonetheless.

You really think China is that much better? I've been in China for a couple of years (teaching and otherwise) and really don't think the teaching biz here has developed a great deal yet. You can earn enough to get by but I think your savings really are practically nil compared to elsewhere. And you have to deal with a lot of the same crap I read people complaining about in Korea.

Like I said, Jiangsu and Zhejiang province are way more civilized than Korea. It depends where you are in China; it is a big place and way more varied than Korea.

I was in Korea for 3 years, traveled all around the country. Where in China are you, if you don't mind me asking?

Been mostly based in and around Shanghai. After a few years here I really am going a bit nuts and am ready to leave, I'm considering Korea as an option.

From what I've read on these boards, the negative complaints, you could replace the word "Korea" with "China" (or maybe "Shanghai") and in 90% of cases it would fit seamlessly. Was actually going to start a topic on this, may do so when I get around to it, to hear some opinions of others who have experienced both places.

I have lived and taught in Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam and now China. Korea was the worst, and I had good gigs, but if you want to try it out, go ahead. If you've ever wondered why Korean EFL forums have more complaints than any other, you will find out soon enough. Good luck with whatever you decide to do though.
