I am sorry spliff, but that statement is not logical.

I am "A" therefore "B" exists has no basis in logic. Rhetoric maybe, but definitely not logic.

Dialectical thinking is not logic? But it is really cricket... Cool

Perhaps in 2100....people in the US are way too concerned with the candidate's religion.

how often do we see clips of bush leaving services?

like most christians i know, many of them pay lip service out of fear of social ostricizing and/or fear of hell (which is a non-judaic) that isn't in the bible.

You mean unless his name was John Kerry?

These guys don't exist anymore. However, if you had a General who fixed Iraq, put Iran its place, and basically kicked ass at everything he did, meanwhile causing his enemies to tremble in fear at the mention of his name, then YES, an Atheist could be elected President.

Its not likely these days where military leaders are criticized under a microscope of civilians who have never fired a gun in their life.

Sounds like someone like MacArthur, and seeing as he was the guy who wanted to create a radioactive wasteland between Korea and China with nukes, hope that never happens.

It is kind of convenient. You can violate international law, invade a country to try to steal its resources, kill hundreds of thousands of people, spend hundreds of billions of borrowed money and know God said was ok.

John Kerry wasn't elected because in the end he would have had Americans cowering behind their sofas rather than fighting against their enemy, real or perceived.

Before anyone fires off on this opinion, the above statement addresses specifically what this poster believes Kerry would have done. The rest of the statement is for clarification of the point of the opinion.

Oh, and here's another opinion...John Kerry wasn't a hero. He was a fraud and a coward during the war (in more ways than one). After he rotated back to the world, he appeared - in his dress whites and still an active duty officer - at anti-war rallies, throwing his medals in the dirt whenever a camera was rolling. These rallies defined "aid and comfort." Treason, in other words. His actions lengthened the war and cost more soldiers, sailors, and marines their lives.

...and my rant was completely off-topic. For that, I apologize to all.

Doesn't matter. Clearly, religious faith is wholly compatible with scientific (that is, evidenced statements about reality) belief. Examples: Tony Blair, John McCain, Francis Collins.

Belief or lack of belief in God specifically is of absolute irrelevance. What is highly relevant is that we have political leaders who believe in and understand evidenced statements about reality - evolution, climate change, everything else. The McCains, Blairs, Clintons of the world fit the bill. The George Dubyas, the Mike Huckabees, do not.

Let's not forget that Blair is the second messiah.
Gordon Brown is more of a John The Baptist.
I pray to Blair every night hoping he'll forgive my student loans but the interest keeps coming.

I think Obama is in the early phases of a messiah complex. He probably truly believes he is Americas last hope. If not the world's. I hope this isn't true. Bush obviously believe he was chosen by God and can easily justify his failings as president through similar thinking. An atheist president would be interesting, but I'd hope they'd have better sense. Hopefully America will just build a robot to run the country. Although both atheists and robots can suffer messiah complexes, or so I have read.

In the end America will be long gone before an atheist is elected leader. Although Ronald Reagan Jr is an atheist, maybe he could run on father's name and surprise us.
