Eh. I'm not a PS3 fanboy. I don't own a game console, actually, and I don't plan on buying one anytime soon. I actually owned a 360 for a while, but I sold it.
As for downloadable content, you're speaking to a very small slice of the mainstream population - the techies and gamers. What the PS3 will do is bring gaming to those who bought the PS3 for its Blu-Ray capability, and not the other way around, as most people thought.
Understandably, however, I think most people in this forum belong to that small slice - those who understand technology and who understand that disc-less media is the way to go. We download a movie, transfer it to a HD, whether it be attached to a 360 or PS3, and watch it on our nice LCD That's certainly what I plan on doing, if I ever buy a media extender, or a PS3.
But we've got realize that most people simply aren't that technologically savvy. I was trying to speak more to a general population.
Like I said, 360 is the best system right now. The games alone and hugely successful Live make it worth the purchase. But you're right - Microsoft will come out with something in 2010. But that's two years from now. And it too, no doubt, will be plagued with stupid problems like a 33% failure rate. |

why does there have to be a winner? we don't argue about peanut butter or pizza places -- there's plenty of room for all three consoles.
but if you really want to argue: all three play games. the ps3 has one game. the wii is more fun with other people. the ps3 plays blu-ray, but you can download hd movies and stream them from your 360. the ps3 has built in wireless and the 360 has a usb connector if you don't have a cable long enough, or have the router on the roof of your house. the wii has motion sensor paddles that have to be strapped to your hand, lest you put a hole in your television/wall/friend's head.
i've been thinking of getting a ps3 to play metal gear, but i can't justify paying that much money for one game. blu-ray? maybe, but i don't have a tv that will do it justice. my 360 has done well when i'm able to find the games for it. that's where play-asia comes in. |

The future of HD viewing isn't Blueray either - it's streamed or downloadable content - 100Mbit lines make it possible.

Only when prices come down. And the parent companies show no real interest in lowering them. Unlike illegal downloading, where it's convenient and free, the movie people want you to pay for the convenience. When they start selling downloadable movies for about $2 or less at HD quality, then I'll buy in. Right now, Apple TV charges $4 to $5.
As for the PS3 HD movie downloads.... well, they have some work to do. Xbox is honing its download system, but the PS3's speed currently sucks. Remember, you should consider the cost of running your PS3 for 18 hours while downloading. Electricity is not free, and the thing sucks something like 380 watts out of the wall. If you ran it for 4 hours a day, that would add another $80 per year to your electric bill. FYI, the Xbox360 runs on about half of that amount of power.

I have become really disappointed with the HD Movie downloads from the Playstation Store.
The first HD movie I downloaded on Wednesday took nearly 18 HOURS to download. So, I thought I would do some testing.
First my setup.... My new PS3 80gb is Cat-5 hardwired to my home 10/100 Linksys network (No wireless).
Comcast "Blast" (18mbps) is my connection to the internet. The Cat-5 out of my desktop computer is hooked to the same Linksys 10/100 router as the PS3.
I used my Dell XPS desktop to test the speed of my internet connection at www.speedtest.net
After several speedtest.net tests of my internet connection using the desktop, I averaged 15.5mbps on the download test.
I then went to NASA's HD download website and downloaded to the desktop a 190MB 1080i film clip in slightly less than 4 minutes.
I would think that the PS3 should be able to download from the PlayStation Store at least at 15.5mbps... Nope... Much.. Much.. Much... SLOOOOOWER...
Here are the "speed" tests for the PS3. The PS3 was doing nothing else during the single movie downloads (No Gaming)
The Wednesday download of the James Bond HD Movie "Die Another Day" was 7,820 meg and took ~18 hours. |
And for X-box:

How Long Does it Take to DL a Movie?
I'm in SF, on Comcast's 6Mbit cable modem service. I started downloading Akira Kurosawa's Dreams at 10PM PST. And an hour and a half later, I'm only 20% through. This is a standard def, 2 hour movie that weighs in at 1.3GB. The math: based on my 6mbit connection, I'm looking at about 7-8 hours of download. So, it seems the best strategy for buying and watching Xbox Live flicks is...
to set em to DL in the morning before work, or before you go to bed, and have them ready the next morning. HD movies, at around 5-6GB, should take almost a day straight. I wonder if Comcast will throttle my bandwidth. Looks like this might take you considerably longer than going to blockbuster. Or if you're queuing up multiple movies, even Netflix might be a bit faster. If you're buying movies, tell us how long they take to download. |

| thinking of getting one of these badboys, im big on good quality stereo loud sound- especially when gaming, just helps bring you into the game more, therefore i like to hook them up to my speakers, which take a left right audio coaxil input, to help me decide which console is the best (bare in mind i have 2 decent speakers, and will always have decent speakers anywhre, but have a trashy tv) which consoles have a standard stereo left/right white and red direct stereo output actually based on the sysytem itself? |

The PS3 has optical out, which will provide 5.1 channels of audio, and also has a dongle included for 2 channel (left/right) audio should you so desire. You can, of course, make use of HDMI output if your receiver and/or TV can handle it.
The audio output on the PS3 is actually superior to many CD players in the $400 and under range. It has impressed many people. Personally, I love to use it for audio streaming through my wifi router. I stream my songs from my wife's computer (and mine) to it. |

To the gamers: I only really play sports games (Madden, Live, NHL etc) and want to get online to play...
Is one better than the other? Any preference? Thanks |

1. EA stuff on the Wii isn't really that great (see the horrible Wii reviews of NCAA 2009.)
2. I believe the X-Box 360 has the best online experience from everything I've heard.
So...yeah, I'd probably get the 360 if I were you. |

| i gotta say i'm anti microsoft. the online part is decent because you pay for it. the following come included with the ps3 and are an extra charge or do not exist on the xbox 360 ( I had one) : wireless internet adapter, free online multiplayer, blue ray player, web browser . the bottom line is buy the system that your friends use or the one that has your most desired games. and a side not, a ridiculously large number of xbox's fail and must be replaced. luckily i returned my xbox to walmart after two solid months of use. i told them it crashed too much (which it did ) |

| if you want a massive selection of games then get an xbox. there are so many cheap older games on it and obviously newer ones. I haven't even played half my games yet as I was able to keep on picking up some of the older games with great reviews for less than $20. |
