I like Rick Warren I have read a couple of his books, especially the Purpose Driven Life. The reason I like it is b/c sometimes its hard to put the Bible into todays context. That is why Rick Warren and Joel Osteen are so popular. Yes, it might not be verse from verse out of the Bible but lets face it most people have hard time understanding what the real message is behind the verse, especially in the Old Testemant. I am not a religious person really at all yet Rick Warren reaches alot of people who would of otherwise just not really cared.

About a year ago I decided I would start reading the Bible so I started from the beginning in Exodus. Wow, it just listed a bunch of people that lived to be like 550 years old and had 277 kids and then went on to list the name of every freakin kid. The Bible lost me on the 3rd page. Short attention span you can see! Although I do like the movie Moses!! I always cry when the slaves are leaving Egypt

I think of these kind of preachers more inspirational though. Sort of like when a door closes a window opens which honestly is what people are usually looking for.

What I got out of reading Rick Warrens book is that everything does happen for a reason. Alot of shitty things have happened to me in the last 3 years and I realize now if they didn't happen it wouldn't of gotten me to where I am today which is leaving for South Korea in 16 days,counting... which my goal in life was to travel!! See if I wouldn't of been so desperate to find something better to do with my life I would have never found the teaching gig or the balls to go through with it.

Religion to me is Faith. I don't go to church on Sunday, really only on Easter and Christmas but I still consider myself religious b/c I have faith.
Alot of people might disagree but they are not doing a very Christian thing by judging me, are they!!

I say use Rick Warren "ideas" b/c you will reach alot more people that way.

350 years ago the Puritans discerned from the Bible the purpose and meaning of life:

Westminster Shorter Catechism #1 What is the chief end of man?

Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.

The remaining 106 questions and answers detail, with copious Biblical citations, what that means for our "purpose-driven" lives.

Here is a good critique of the book, "A Purpose Driven Life."

Do enjoy and take seriously the points made!

Here's an interview with the author I just stumbled across, second from the bottom. I'd never heard of the book. I thought he had a few interesting things to say, particularly about China and Islam and the major religious issues facing the world, but he gets off pretty easy with his you don't get into heaven except through Jesus regardless of how you lived your life position.

Try to live a good life. You know what to do.

Don't waste your time on trying to understand 'God' or his/her role for you in the general scheme of things. Don't listen to people who tell you they know. Don't give your money to anyone in the name of any organized religion.

Right before you die, and if you feel the need, convert to any number of religions. Take your pick. It's a crap shoot, really, one heaven is as good as another, and most have a rolling membership.

If you need religion to make sense of your life and circumstances (sadly, usually the latter), keep it to yourself. If you have to preach, do so in the streets or on the subway while wearing insane clothing and/or a billboard (lighting and amplification optional) so that people can make fun of you. Organized churches are no fun because you can't heckle the speaker.

Unless it's a sketch from the Simpsons with Bart asking if pirates get their legs back I wouldn't bother.

This book is fake Christianity. It's basically a feel good book with little to do with Christianity, the bible is not even qouted, but rather footnoted. The book is spiritually empty - a shell with nothing to offer a Christian - Joel Osteen is a poser.

as for teaching with it, unless the student is already at the high intermediate level it will be too difficult.

Spot on analogy!

If a person's purpose in life is to go to a country that's 98% Christian (Guatemala) and try to convert two-thirds of them from one brand (Catholic) to another (a brand of Protestant) while teaching English then who am I, a non-Christian, to point out that the purpose seems pretty petty in a world where there are billions (in Asian, African and Muslim countries) who don't even know anything about Jesus and the Christian message.

To try and get people who already believe in Jesus to go to your church rather than another Christian church?

*shrug*

I know, I know... your interpretation of the bible is right, another's is wrong... religious wars are endless and in many forms...

(It all seems very strange to me. Time to exit a religious thread. G'day.)

my husband's church buddies picked that book a while back for their bible study sessions--to read in Korean. It's been translated into Korean and is popular and readily available. If you try to teach it in English you may find that the students have already read in in Korean, which may or may not be what you're after. Just so you know...

Best,
