There are more than a few nations around the world that will secretly smile to see china experiencing difficulties.
But the adversity will only make the Chinese more nationalistic and power-driven.
China has serious problems in maintaining its growth surge to the top.
First up it is running out of water as the desert increases year by year.
Second it lacks resources and is having to virtually colonise Africa (propping up various despotic governments there) to get their hands on them.
It has massive environmental pollution and water quality problems; and its megadam at 3 gorges could just turn into a disaster when it fills with silt and algal blooms. Not to mention triggering destructive earthquakes for up to 60 km radius.
Be afraid. The Chinese monster is awakening at a massive cost to the worlds environment. If every chinese person lives half as well as the average american then we can kiss our planet goodbye to global warming. And to get there they are prepared to support every fascist govt on earth while snapping up more territory such as Tibet. |

I agree with the sentiments expressed about actors and actresses spouting personal opinions about world events and politics. They really do sound quite dim at times don't they?
However, I feel much the same about musicians expressing views on international politics. It is simply a question of being educated on the matters at hand. What valid right, or formal educational background, do people like Bono have, in lecturing the Prime Minister of Canada about his responsibilities to third world countries. He thinks he deserves a private audience with the PM simply because he sings in a ho-hum rock band. Which, by his own admission, is the only job he's ever had.
No, best to leave affairs of state, to the appropriate dignitaries, diplomats, and politicians.
An ability for articulate rhetoric is not the sole criteria for for validity of opinion. Like it or not, Canadians elected Harper to speak for us, as did the Americans regarding Bush. The people's chance to speak will come soon for both of us when we go to the polls again. |

| I remember reading an interview that she gave where she regretted a lot of the "desperate" things that she did when she was a struggling actress in the (early?) 80's. She admitted that there was nothing that she wouldn't do to become a star back then. Reading between the lines......she probably spent a lot of time on her back on casting couches back in "the day". Maybe there's some karma there in that her career is non-existant now. |

This is the same wench who used her star power to get her ex into the zoo to see the Komodo Dragon up close. The the zookeepers let him go it and the darn mini-dinosaur got ahold of his toe and went gator on it, ie. started trying to twist it off.
Earthquakes are about plate tectonics, not karma. The same as Katrina wasn't the Wrath of God. Within our livetimes, California will be struck by a huge earthquake which will have a ripple effect on the world economy. It's not going to be because of gay marriage or the porn industry. |

Not a big fan of Sharon Stone. Or any actor or actress who's not dead.
Not a fan at all of taking one's political cues from actors & actresses, especially really dumb ones. "karma"?!
But still, China's been on the top of my shit-list for nearly a decade, so I'm all for bashing the Chinese at every turn, and any sound bites at all that serve to whip up negative sentiment towards them is A-OK in my book. So I applaud her efforts madly. |

China will not show movies with her in it even though she apologized.
China is calling it a crime against humanity.
Sharon Stone should have said "I'm sorry. My concern over the oppression of the Tibetian people in occupied China is so strong that I misspoke about an unrelated other tragedy happening in nearby China."
One could say:
God knows irony. Tibetians lost their traditional tent homes, livestock, livelihood and were driven into big buildings to be administered by the Han Chinese; Sizchuan Chinese lost their buildings, livelihood, driven into tents outside to be administered by the Han Chinese. |

A little bit ham-fisted, but not entirely unjustified. Personally, as an American who has watched the Chinese rally around this incident (known as 5-12), I recall 9-11.

They picked up this kind of stupid, moral hyperbole from the West. Everything is a crime against humanity these days. |

Good for China. I am tired of condescending, ignorant celebrities opining on world affairs, usually unsolicited. Let this be a lesson to the rest of them.
Further, this just in...
| Sharon Stone, upon receiving 'a letter' from Tibet (sure, she did, honest) wrote: |
| "They wanted to go and be helpful, and that made me cry," she said. "It was a big lesson to me that sometimes you have to learn to put your head down and be of service even to people who aren't nice to you." |
"All this earthquake and all this stuff."
"People who aren't nice to you." (That one was certainly diplomatically phrased.)
"It made me cry."
"It was a big lesson."
She only worsens the situation every time she talks. She should stop talking and get back to playing people whose lines are scripted by professional writers and coached by professional directors.
And finally, sometimes I wonder whether she did not actually play herself to one degree or another in Casino.

Well...there are intelligent, well-spoken celebrities and there are ignorant a$$holes who also claim the name celebrity. Why shouldn't a celebrity be entitled to their own opinion on politics or world affairs or run for public office? They have as much right to speak their mind as Gopher or friendoken or myself. Their words will be shown for what they are...JUST as in this situation! Most people recognize a repugnant idiot...and if they don't it's their own fault.
What is idiocy is to say that celebrities or musicians or whoever should shut the hell up. Why? Because you don't agree with them? Because you're afraid of what they will say? Or because you are jealous of the influence they might have? The whole point of a democracy is everyone gets their say and has the free-will to choose whom they will follow. |

Wrong.
Their speaking is not part of any democratic process, as in "just like anyone has a right to speak their mind." They speak through mass-media as well-known actors. And such actors have commanded disproportionate and wholly unwarranted influence over mass audiences since they appeared in modern history. People follow them. Not only in film and advertising. But, in any case, this becomes especially problematic when there is little in their heads and they can say little more than ridiculous phrases such as "all this earthquake and all this stuff" when they "articulate" themselves on their own.
Why? Because millions of people listen to people such as Charleton Heston, Rosie Odonnell, and Sharon Stone -- Tom Cruise's failure to persuade people when commenting on Brooke Shield's medication and delivering his learned treatises on "psychiatry" notwithstanding. |

People, including actors, have the right to humiliate themselves.
Regarding the bolded type - you can't ask people to not express their opinion just because the media deems them to be "newsworthy". If people follow the ramblings of Sharon Stone, et al., then it's their choice. They have every right to speak their mind - just like I have every right to either agree or disagree with her/them.
I actually like the comment. Anything anti-Chinese these days gets my vote... |
