Oh yeah, I forgot, 'goof' means 'pedophile' now, doesn't it?
When I was a kid it just meant 'jerk' but a few years ago the jail definition became more common...I hear that in jail, it means 'pedophile.' Pretty sure it was just a BC thing but maybe it's more nationwide than that?
I got into it with a buddy a few years back, and tried to make the case that it was stupid to imagine a heinous insult when none was intended; he said no, goof is a go word, if anybody calls you a goof it is go time. I disagreed and told him he was being dumb, and had never been to jail anyway, so why bother getting all wound up about it? It got quite heated actually and I told him to stop being a goof. We fought! but just a little bit, like brothers fight, more of a casual thing with no real hate behind it. It was incredibly dumb and kind of fun I guess. Ah, booze.
But no, Uberscheisse, I wasn't using it like that in this case--to me, it's still just an elementary school word for 'poopy-head' or whatever. I just meant that there are a lot of asholes in Vancouver.
Maybe it's a generational thing too; it was never a big deal back in the 80s as far as I can remember. When did the whole thing start, I wonder?

To answer my own question regarding the etymology of 'goof,' and the strange fact that it now means 'paedo...'

How could I forget the old scumbag band from Toronto, the bunchoffkinggoofs?
Hey, wow, they're still alive. Weird. http://www.bunchofuckingoofs.com/bfg2home/

And from wikipedia...
"In broad usage, a goof is a mistake, or a foolish person....but Goof has also come to be a slang name for a child molester, especially in prisons. This usage likely stems from the previous usage, i.e., the offender was foolish for making such a mistake."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goof

Doesn't say it's region or nation specific, or how long it has had this second definition. I'd have to say it's fairly recent; mid-nineties I think. Maybe before that for jail people, but I wouldn't know about that.

i'm pretty certain that "goof" is canada-specific. the only time i've heard it out an american mouth is from a dude from erie, pennsylvania, which is damned close to canada.

another thing i'm sure is that you're right about it coming from prison slang, but that fact is lost upon most of the non-prison-going population of white trashees who use it regularly (myself included).

propaghandi have resurrected it on their latest (i think) album, in the song "rock for sustainable capitalism".

Good link! I forgot about those guys too. Buddy the Singer sounds like a young Danzig, but better because he's not a steroid monkey goth douchebag like Glennn is.

Vancouver's a great city especially if you're into outdoor activities.

Other poster mentioned T.O. Funny how I don't know any Vancouverites that dream of going to Toronto! Even Blue rodeo dishes Toronto in Western Skies

Skiing, hiking, top notch moutain biking right in the city, Lots of golf courses. Some good city owned courses. Kite sailing, rock climbing up in Squamish.

One hour from Downtown and you can be in the middle of untamed wilderness ie: Back side of the mountains.

Downtown Eastside is a cesspool, but it isn't dangerous. Just don't walk down the back alleys with sandals. More of a danger getting in fights with suburban punks in Granville street bars. Better to drink in Cambie, Brickyard, 340. Cheap beer and few fights.

You do need money in Vancouver to really enjoy it!

There's also an Irish Sport and Social Club that plays gaelic.
