How far does the hwatcha fire, according to historical figures? Can that distance be duplicated using period technology? I saw the vides on YouTube and the rockets do seem to be flying quite a distance down range but are the rockets propelled by the same ingredients available during the 14th century? What's the the point of the rockets? Were they for fear or did they have an explosive device? If they had an explosive device, how was this triggered? Lots of questions that I hope the OP and the 'busters can answer...

Actually, there were three sizes of carts and arrows: small, medium, large. Some of the rockets had explosives, while others were just projectiles. Here is a chart (S,M,L are numbers 2, 3, 6):
For the most part, I believe the rocket arrows (신기전) are powered by modern propellants nowadays. I did see, however, a video clip once where they mixed their own powder and packed it. They wanted to show what happened when a cone was not formed at the nozzle (it explodes) and when you add a cone (it flies).
I forget whether or not the explosive was triggered by fuse or impact, but I think it was the former. |

Well, I heard back from the producer. He said they finished the hwacha story and that it will air probably sometime this fall (he'll give me a heads-up). Of course, here in Korea, the episodes are more than 1-1/2 years old, so I'll have to ask someone in the States to tape it for me if I want to see it sooner.
I'll even get a small credit; with how fast they roll on that show, it will probably be for a fraction of a second... |

| I don't think that was Mythbusters, but, a copycat show called the Re-Inventors. |

| I heard from the show's producer. This episode is scheduled to air October 22 at 9:00 p.m. ET. I hope I can find someone to record it for me as Discovery Channel shown in Korea airs Mythbusters that are 1-1/2 years old. |

| I watched the movie 신기전 today (don't watch it -- it was shite, and historical fiction or not, they had too many mistakes), and they had rockets and arrows going all over the place. Cool effects and might be fun to compare to what the Mythbusters get. |

You'll be able to find it on torrent sites a couple of hours after it's broadcast. |

Remember that episode when they explored the myth about the Chinese scholar (king?) that attached a large selection of firecrackers to his chair & supposedly launched into space? If they can cover that myth surely fan death would be doable. |
How about a follow up on that cat who lit a bottle rocket in his butt that was making the rounds on the internet a few years back? |
