Great interview - thanks for the link. It's as though the guy seems to think that going in and out of prisons the world over was his destiny. |

| I wonder if he's hoping that he'll get a reduced charge in Thailand and that by the time he gets out, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Canada will have lost interest in him. He sure looks demented in the middle-finger photo. Maybe he's finally at last come to the realisation of just how screwed he is. Or maybe he's hoping to get transferred back to Canada after four years under international prisoner-exchange agreements, having realised that in fact fleeing to Thailand was an incredibly stupid thing to do. |

| I still don't understand why he decided to go to Thailand. You would hide in a country that has no history of capital punishment, prison violence, empathetic police and a good legal system. I guess his brain is wired differently to others. Weird guy. |

I was just reading a few news stories I found on Google News. It looks as though he pleaded guilty to one of the charges in May but news agencies didn't catch it until a few days ago.
If he does live to old age I hope it's only after he's done a world tour of some of the world's worst prisons. |

Its nice to see him get his just desserts after helping ruin the reputation of teachers in Korea.
but it would be even better to see authorities tackle the problem on a wider scale because I think he's just the tip of the iceberg in SE Asia. The only reason they made him a high proofile case was for them to show off their new "unswirling" computer gadgetry. |

People tend to flee to what is familar, where they know the culture, the places, how to get around, maybe even a little of the language. He couldn't go to Canada, because they'd certainly catch him at the airport.
His two mistakes were going to a small place in Thailand and logging on to one of his old websites. He should have stayed in a big city with lots of foreigners where he could blend in better, changed his appearance as much as possible and stayed well away from all websites he'd frequented. He might have managed to be free for years. |

His other big mistake was using his boyfriend's cell phone so that police could pin-point his location. As I recall, Thai police didn't jump on the case en masse until several complaints from Thais surfaced a few days after he enetered the country. |

This repetative and not very informative article just came in today's Globe and Mail. It suggests that prosecting Neil might be difficult in Canada. With all the photographic evidence that seems hard to believe. I wonder if anyone's done a check of all the computers Neil used in Korea. If nothing else he could likely be charged with possession of child porn here as well.
From what I've read about Thai prisons and law, if Neil does plead not-guilty on the more serious count he'll likely get the full 20 years. Even if he is transferred to Canada after four years, Canada will be obligated under the treaty to keep him locked up for the full 20, with no parole, unless he get's a royal pardon from the king of Thailand. |

Trial Begins
| Quote: |
Former B.C. teacher Christopher Paul Neil appeared in court in Thailand on Tuesday for the start of his trial on charges of abusing a nine-year-old boy.
The BBC reported the 32-year-old was brought to Bangkok's Central Criminal Court in ankle chains and held a magazine in front of his face to shield himself from the media.
Neil, who is originally from Maple Ridge, B.C., has already been sentenced to more than three years in prison after pleading guilty in May to similar charges against a 13-year-old boy.
The boy involved in Neil's current trial claims he was paid $15 to $30 to perform oral sex in 2003, but Neil has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Neil was arrested in Thailand in 2007 following an international manhunt that began after hundreds of photos of a man abusing boys and teenagers surfaced on the internet.
The face of the man was digitally swirled to hide his identity, but Interpol unscrambled the photos. |
