Bill Maher wrote about this trend in his book, "New Rules". He wasn't writing about celebrities, but teens taking "virginity pledges. I'm going to post what he wrote here;

"Abstinence pledges make you horny. In a setback for the morals/values crowd, a new 8 year study reveals that American teenagers who take "virginity" pledges wind up with just as many STDs as the other kids do. But that's not all--taking the pledge also makes a teenage girl six times more likely to perform oral sex and four times more likely to allow anal. Which leads me to an important question. Where were these pledges when I was in high school?
Seriously, when I was a teenager, the only kids having anal intercourse were the ones who missed. My idea of lubrication was oiling my bike chain. If I had known I could be getting porn-star sex the same year I took Algebra II simply by joining up with the Christian Right, I'd have been so down with Jesus, they would have had to pry me out of the pew.
There are a lot worse things then teenagers having sex--namely teenagers *not* having sex. Here's something you'll never hear: "That suicide bomber blew himself up because he was having too much sex. Sex, sex, sex, nonstop. All that crazy Arab ever had was sex, and look what happened."
The theory of the puritans of the 21st century seems to be: The less kids know about sex, the better. Because people who talk about pee-pees are potty mouths. And so armed with limited knowledge and believing regular vaginal intercourse to be either immaculate or filthy dirty, these kids did with their pledges what everyone does with contracts: They found loopholes--two of them to be exact.
Is there any greater irony than the fact that the Christian Right actually got their precious little adolescent daughters to say to their freshly scrubbed boyfriends: "Please, I want to remain pure for my wedding night, so only in the ass. Then I'll blow you." Well, atleast these kids are really thinking outside the box.

Now, I have to say, I don't like how he didn't actually cite the poll he used to get those numbers, but his point is still valid. I consider myself a Christian, but it's this attitude about issues like this (sexuality, ect) that piss me off with fundamentalists.
If someone wants to remain a virgin, for however long they want to do so, then that's great. But announcing it to the world is grandstanding (and in the case of psuedo-celebrities, I agree with what another poster said, it's selling sex, just in a different way). Keep decisions like this private, certainly don't annouce it, or they run the risk of being treated as a joke.

It's like high schools in very conservative areas that pressure teens into signing "abstenance pledges". Research has shown that is does nothing to reduce sexual activity among teens.

Intercourse is down (so, technically, they can say they are still virgins), but oral and anal is WAY up.

precisely. those were the (hilarious) results from some Jesus freak youth groups with their "chastity rings" and other such nonsense.

they stayed pure while sucking cock and taking it up the ass.

It wasn't a recent thing, but when I went home several years back the big thing with the grade school crowds were things called "Rainbow Parties": a mix of several guys and several girls, all the girls sporting different shades and colours of lipstick. They blew as many guys as they could to give all of them a colourful ring around their cocks. This was almost in the same breath as the news of these new-fangled virginity pledges. All I could think was where the hell were these pledges when I was a high-schooler?

If you want to be saved, just pray to Jesus. He's magic!

I can't help but wonder why this stuff is acceptable, but when I make a tongue in cheek remark by saying the girl should be raped, my post gets deleted?

One of the new podcast downloads is this very routine from his "The Decider" concert.
