What the heck is the op's definition of "Islamophobe"???

I'm surprised anyone who is even semi-up on current affairs would ask that question. My take on it is that some people are irrational to the point of phobia on topics where Moslems are involved. Intitials like BJ and BV come to mind as examples. Not sure if there is a connection with the first initial being 'B'. Probably just coincidence.

I suppose my biggest gripe with Islamophobes is that they are self-proclaimed experts at interpreting the Koran and are comfortable saying what the average Moslem believes. It probably comes of them having a very rigid black & white view of the world.

Kemal Ataturk is the man!

I think I read somewhere(numerous places actually) that the religious government in Turkey has passed the only legislation advancing women's rights and free speech that Turkey has seen in decades.

Granted, the Turkish Islamicists probably wouldn't be nearly so tolerant if they hadn't been under the Kemalist thumb for so long. And the progressive legislation probably has as much to do with sucking up to the EU as with anything else. But still, credit where credit is due.

Conversely, under his system the military is the guarantor of secularity and is not afraid to act its role when needed. The military's role in Tukey's politics must be a major sticking point for joining the EU. I still think he's a visionary though. But even Mustafa wouldn't have predicted Turkey trying to join a United Europe... Shocked

There are only three nations with a muslim population more than 20% that are considered free: Serbia&Mont, Benin and Suriname.

Turkey shows us that the boot of government needs to be on the neck of islam if you want to prevent a religious takeover. Ataturk had some very strong ideas about islam and almost fully purged the religion from all civic institutions. He was the ultimate islamaphobe, and he project is being undone.

I've got nothing against Islam in particular. I think all religions are equally stupid. Very Happy
