I don't you HAVE to be an ESL teacher to be on this board, though it might help a bit. I guess as long as you're interested in Korea, may want to teach, or have friends who teach and don't troll ...whatever, you'll be OK. |
katydid, I absolutely HATE trolls and those who don't toe the line in the Korean forum.

Welcome James, good to have you aboard!
Just wanna give you a heads up if you don't know Austin. He's not a serious poster, even though he posts in a style that makes you think he's serious, but actually he's a troll who just wants to annoy people.
What he does is include lots of subliminal criticisms and judgements of the OP in his message, he hides them with using things like "if you were not teachingwell , it may be a good idea to blah blah blah ..." and then you go back to the OP and see that there was nothing in the OP to suggest that the poster was not teaching well.
Austen has a superiority complex and a monstrous chip on his shoulder. Just wanted you to bear this in mind when you read him. Luckily he's not posting much at the moment.
I think it would be fairly accurate to say that he's not very well liked around here. |
This post is worse than anything I have read of Austin's. You're criticizing Austin for being critical of others? Pot/kettle = black.
If you don't like or agree with someone on this board, keep it to yourself. If Austin is really as bad as you seem to think he is, then people can figure it out for themselves -- they don't need you telling them how to feel. |

Keep it to myself? That's not the policy or the practice around here. Sorry to shock you but we are allowed to air opinions, both positive and negative. The difference between Austin and myself is that he makes his criticisms in veiled form, hidden inside "if" statements, and based on presumptions that are unsubstantiated. I make my criticism of Austin after having observed him do this for many months. My criticism of Austin is well informed, his criticism of others is not. |

UnJef,
If Kiwiboy had just thrown that out on the board for no particular reason I might be inclined to agree with you. As it stands I think it's a pretty sound assessment of what Austin was doing in this thread, like so many others.
Welcome to the forum, James. |

Welcome to the forum, James. |
If it is indeed a "sound assessment," then it will eventually become apparent to James once he spends some time on this forum.
I understand that this is a forum to air opinions, but I would hope that it would not be a forum to air criticism of other people. I realize that many people aren't terribly fond of Austin's postings on here, and perhaps feel that many of his postings have been critical of others, but I fail to see how postings such as Kiwiboy's solve anything.
If anything, you are stooping to the level that you are criticising Austin for being at. |

One more time for clarity. I give reasons for my criticism, Austin does not.
You may indeed hope that the forum is not about criticism of people, but that's hardly within in your control. There is a lot of critical stuff on here, though usually the mods prefer you to keep it to criticism of the content of a post, rather than the person. In special cases though, where someone has proved themself a die hard troll over a significant period of time, they kind of lose immunity from the personal attacks rule. You'll notice I made a general personal attack on Austin and the mods didn't take it down. That's probably because Austin has taken considerable pains to make himself unwelcome around here. My own personal problem with him is insignificant, he's annoyed all the mods, and plenty of other people as well. You make your bed, you sleep in it. |

Just read your post again and Im going to comment on this part. How can it solve anything? We're trying to get Austin to stop trolling, and have been doing so for quite some time. He hasn't listened, and so our voices are getting louder. I see your post count, you have come in on the end of this thing, it has a history. I suggest you sit it out, and concerntrate on establishing your own identity here before you get into telling others how they should be posting. |

Whoa.. slow down there. The fact that we didn't (yet) take down that particular post doesn't (necessarily) mean we endorse or share the view expressed. That's not how it works here. It just means that those of us who have seen the comment and not removed it probably feel that it has a right to be aired. It can be read as an appraisal of another user's posting patterns and positions, rather than a string of insults and name-calling.
By the way, UnJef's criticism of your comment is also fair game. |

I saw that this 'welcome swiss james' reached 2 pages and X responses, and thought...'no way this could generate such commentary.'
Sure enough, highjacking of thread....oh well, welcome to status quo, SJ!

I'm not suggesting that fact that it's not not deleted means you agree with it. It is a fact of life though, and mods agree with this, that mod'ing is not a science. If Austin was very popular with a lot of posters and mods, and he complained, there might have been action.
PS I like the "yet" in your post, just noting that you reserve the right to take down posts, a subtle assertion of mod-ness. I also like the "necessarily", just covering all your bases and allowing for both possibilities.
I realise your pur5pose, to assert that mods are even handed with everyone whether they agree with them or not and whether they are well liked or not. Must be difficult. |
