You'll need to post better specs and preferably a little more detail about what games/other stuff you want to run to get a good answer.

For HL2 and video out I'd probably say 9800 pro again. It's not going to handle bioshock though.

I think that's part of my problem. How long before you have to have more than one video card to play more than one game? I've had a lot of free time today and done a lot of reading up on the things. I think I'd like a Radeon HD 4870 provided I could pick one up for less than 300'000, which doesn't seem likely. The nvidia 8600 GTS sounds like an OK, cheaper alternative.

Well I bought an 8600gt. Installed it and it worked for about five minutes then the screen went all whacky. Spent about an hour trying to fix the problem. Took my whole machine into the place where I bought the card and it turns out the card is faulty and they don't have any more of them right now. I left my machine there with the promise that it'll have a working 8600gt in it by today.

Haha, ouch. Guess that didn't work out too well at the start. Hope it goes better for you now.

Well, as the technology evolves, so does the graphical intensity of the games, therefore requiring higher level hardware. HL2 is quite old (in the relativeness of the gaming world, and the Source engine scales really well to different levels of hardware) so it does not require the same computational power that something more modern like Bioshock does.

I agree with JustJohn, some more specific system specs are required to adequately assess what would be worth putting in your system. Even just right-click on My Computer and select 'Properties' to get started. But, I believe that your rig is from a transitional period between AGP and PCI-e graphics card types, and knowing which slot you have is extremely important. The two are not interchangable.

If you do happen to have a PCI-e mobo (which I am starting to question) I would suggest the HD4850 over the 4870. Your cpu will be a limiting factor in overall performance, as will the resolution that you run your games at, unless you happen to be running a res greater than 1200x1900 currently. The 4850 is extemely powerful in its own right, and would definitely fulfill your needs.

EDIT: right-click MyComputer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager and expand 'Graphics' will tell you if you have AGP or PCI-e

EDIT2: oops, looks like I was a little slow, sorry.

What a disaster.

First the above crap I told you about. Then I got my computer back with an 8600gt successfully installed and working. Got it home and watched a Doctor Who episode on the TV instead of the monitor (great!). Decided to surf and my Internet was abolished. Somehow my ethernet adapters got deleted in the process. Went to a PC bang downloaded what I thought were the adapters. Messed up my MP3 player I was using as a USB disk, had to reset it, twice. Finally got home installed three different sets of drivers, all of them the wrong ones. Took my case apart found out exactly what my motherboard is. Went back to the PC bang, searched for drivers some more and finally found what I was looking for. Barely managed to get them on my MP3 and bring them home to install. They are now installed and the Internet is working. It's now 9:30.

Somedays I $#%#^ hate computers.

Oh yeah. I threw in an extra gig of RAM too. Up to 2 gigs. Not really noticing any difference.

You won't unless multitasking or running seriously RAM intensive aps. And your card will run HL2 great. It's more like an interactive movie than a game IMO. Seriously great and I'm not usually into FPS games.

Sorry, I've hijacked the thread with my computer problems.

I'm downloading a cracked version of HL2. I'll let you know how the 8600gt does with it.

I bought the Orange Box version through steam. HL2, Episode 1,2 and lost coast along with Portal and Team Fortress 2 all for 40,000won. Great value and I don't begrudge them my pennies at all.

Episode 2 was very enjoyable.

Portal was too short and too easy, but still lots of fun.

TF2 is great if that's your style.

Orange box is a good deal.

Can you buy it in English round these parts?

The version I downloaded (just HL2, no OB) runs 1280*1024, 2* antialiasing, all settings on high at an average between 50 and 60fps with the 8600gt.
