Uh, there are free apps on the app store. Like well over a hundred already, and it hasn't even been open for a week. Some of them are incredibly awesome, like the Remote app. There is no compelling reason to stay jailbroken anymore.

Well, there was no precedent. If I had known Apple was going to charge money to update the software on their products then I would've probably bought a Cowon PMP instead.

I just don't get how iPhone users get it free, but Touch users pay extra.

The main reason I have never and (maybe) never will buy an Apple product is because of all these inane restrictions. When I first went to buy an MP3 player, I learned that Ipods could only be used with one computer and had other restrictions. So I went and bought an Iriver and never looked back. I have a clix 2 now that's great.

I don't understand why people put up with paying all that money and then getting screwed around. It's a little different, but they release the Iphone in Europe with an insanely high price tag, and a few months later they halved the price. I know it's par for the course in technology but surely it leaves a sour taste in the mouth of your customers.

I'm not even going to bother trying to respond to the anti-Apple crowd. Flame wars are a waste of time, and I'm not keen to get into one. What I can't understand is why threads like this always have to end up in that shiteheap Rolling Eyes

I will, however, have to disagree with the above. The best thing about Apple is the community that surrounds it. The Jailbreak/hacking community is fantastic. In my view they take attractive, decent hardware, and turn it into something truly outstanding.

There are many MANY reasons to JB your Touch. At the most basic level, it allows you to change themes! I also agree that there is a wealth of material available in the free JB community that isn't in the App Store. Give it a few days/weeks, and there will be a JB release for 2.0, at which point you can have the best of both worlds. Free, open source apps, and commercial stuff from the App Store if you want it.

Seriously, give it a try.

Again, there are already free apps in the app store. Also, I have "given it a try." My Touch was jailbroken for over 6 months, from about a day after I got it until Saturday. The ability to jailbrake is WHY I got a touch. Now, I don't see the need. Yeah, there may be a few 'can't live without' apps in the jailbreak scene, but I expect most of those to go official sooner or later. I guess time will tell. Personally, it's not worth the bother of having to re-jailbreak every time I want to get a firmware update. Given that there are enough good official apps, I don't want to make the effort to stay jailbroken anymore.

Fair enough. That's a personal choice. In my case, a great deal of the stuff I do and/or use isn't on the App Store. If/when it will be is anyone's guess. I considered going legit, but nothing I've seen from 2.0 or the App Store has persuaded me to.

My point was that jailbreaking could be perfect for the OP. It opens up a world opportunity to play with his iPod, without having to spend $X to do so. If he decides he likes it, but really wants 2.0 and the App Store, he can always restore and upgrade at will.

I've thought about jailbreaking, but I dont' want to deal with the hassle.

My iPod is only 8GB, and the music on there was chosen over the 20+ gb of music on my drive. To jailbreak, I gotta restore my iPod. Then after I jailbreak it, I gotta spend a long time scowering through my entire MP3 collection to find the songs that I had on the iPod.

Another thing I noriced. It would be so much easier if I could open my iPod like a flash drive, jsut copy the contents of the Music. Restore it, and then jsut copy the files back into the music folder.

No, Apple wouldn't make it that easy.

Right, that is annoying...but, that is the price we pay to be able to load songs on our device and then play them instantly (ie, doing everything through iTunes.) I have a Cowon D2, and whenever I change any files on it, the first time I power it on to listen to it takes forever to load because it must scan for all the new files and the changes in the folder structure before you can do anything with it.

Now, which is a bigger hassle? Probably personal preference.

I will say that there are some incredibly useful features in the way iTunes/iPods handle media, my absolute favorite being automatic bookmarking of whatever you're listening to. I tend to switch between podcasts, videos, and music quite often, and it's a godsend to not have to manually set a bookmark, switch to new file, manually locate that bookmark, and then play the file each time I want to listen to something different. (Mainly talking about podcasts and videos.)

I'm not sure I understand the problem. There are tools that allow you to make a "backup" of your iPod (yes, even the touch) on your, or any, computer. These things change regularly, so do some research first.

Assuming this is the problem you're having, you would then be able to add those files to an iTunes playlist. Re-sync that playlist after you're done doing whatever, and you're sorted.

I tend to swap playlists, movies, podcasts etc. fairly regularly, and use iTunes to manage the lot.

So, all I hav eto do is make a playlist with all the songs, movies, audiobooks on my iPod and save that playlist to my computer. And then after I restore, I can just drag that playlist to my Touch and it'll automatically transfer everything over?

The other issue I have is with Syncing. When you change the file info on the song in your iPod, it doesn't update it on the song in yoru computer.

For example, on my iPod, I've manually copy and pasted a lot of the songs lyrics in the song info. Even though I've changed the file information on the iPod, iTune won't automatically update it on the song son my computer.

Apple products are cool, or at least look cool (the iPhone is actually quite lousy compared to even older Nokia, Sony Ericsson or WM phones).

EDIT: I mean lousy as a PHONE (voice, text). The non-phone functions are still pretty cool,

But recently I feel that Apple might just be an evil corporation. Why?

Compare to Microsoft, the bully of the IT world. MS is a HUGE company with market dominance in almost all critical fields. MS can and does act as a bully when it needs to, and does overprice its software, but does many other things right.

Now Apple is so far from being dominant in any part of the market, it is probably having less share than some open source developments in certain areas.

Yet still Apple feels that it needs to (and can!) double-charge its most loyal customers in many areas, such as iTunes (pay to remove DRM from titles you purchased long ago and which new customers already get without DRM), updates, new firmware, functionality that is already available for free, ...

The iPhone became popular only after the protection mechanisms of Apple were broken.

In my eyes that makes Apple a bigger bully than Microsoft (ratio of mean/weight).

Sort of... FIRST, you'll need an appropriate program for your operating system (I'm assuming Windows?), which you should find with a Google search (some like: backup, ipod touch, windows). Remember to look for iPod Touch specific, however, as it works very differently to "normal" iPods. Once you get one, you can copy all (or some) of your stuff to your computer, then either drag n' drop into iTunes or import.

If, for whatever reason, you're forced to import, all of it will show up in the "recently added" smart playlist in iTunes. From there, drag n' drop into your own playlist

SYNCING: You lost me! How the hell have you copy/pasted anything into your iPod without going through iTunes? FTP or similar? Anyway, the reason I carried on so much about the Apple community is that most (if not all) of these problems can be solved by asking in the forums over at
http://www.macrumors.com Make sure you do a search first, though!

Failing that, ipodtouchfans and other ipod specific sites have some degree of feedback/form presence and you're sure to find help there too! Good luck.

I found this software to be quite helpful: http://www.download.com/MediaWidget-Easy-iPod-Transfer/3000-2141_4-10646910.html.

The only two drawbacks are that it costs $19.95 (for those who want everything for free) and that it only supports iPod/iPhone -> PC transfers at the moment.

But for PC -> iPod/iPhone one can still use iTunes. I needed the program to get my music off my iPhone to a new PC.

Hell, I bought the January update because I wanted the new Apps. Now, if I want to take advantage of AppStore, I gotta pay another $10.

People who buy this update now, get the January update for free. Why the hell isn't Apple giving the people who previosuly paid for an update a break?

Yeah, we're total suckers for buying a device that can

A)Play music
B)Vidoes
C)Has a 3.5 inch screen
D)Has wi-fi
E)Can browse the web
F)Can read e-books
H)Can be used as a remote to control the media on your PC
I)Can be used as a PDA
J)CAN FIT IN YOUR POCKET
K)Cost a whopping $300. (Or, my god, $330 if you got hit up for BOTH updates.)

Yep, total suckers, because, you know, there are so many better alternatives out there.
