| I say Biden as well - Obama needs an old white guy on the ticket. |

For Obama-Joe Biden or Kathleen Sebelius
For McCain-Mormon Mitt Romney
The Evangelical Christians are going to have McCain for breakfast after he announces. |

If that's true about the evangelicals being hostile to Romney, why do you think McCain would pick the guy? |

So far, Obama's got the historical change quotient going for him; enough to have just - about an hour ago - got the Democratic nomination by acclamation. Congrats to him; truly a historical moment - whatever your political persuasion - for you Americans and, because that office holder is so darn important to the rest of us, for us, too.
So, to get some of that for himself, McCain might pick as his VP...a woman? A black? A black woman?
Hmm, McCain & Condi? |

I think McCain has an insoluable problem. He needs an unconventional running mate that will grab headlines. He also must choose a conservative who will be ready to inherit the right wing of the party. He can't pick a moderate or a rebel of any kind and still keep the conservative base.
He only has Friday, Saturday and Sunday to announce if he is going to get it in before the convention starts on Monday. His birthday is Friday. My bet is he'll announce then so he can get some of the Sunday morning political show time. Otherwise, the talking heads'll all be bloviating about the Dems convention, which he doesn't want. |

McCain-Rice would be a "maverick" ticket, but it would too closely associate him with Bush.
If Colin Powell were available, he'd probably be the strongest choice to sway independents (though core conservatives wouldn't be thrilled)
Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney both have some major pluses and minuses ...
My guess is that he'll take one of the governors - like Charlie Crist of Florida. |

| McCain Has Made His Pick and Is Set to Tell on Friday |
I told ya so.
WASHINGTON Senator John McCain has decided on his running mate, two Republican strategists in contact with Mr. McCains campaign said Wednesday. He is expected to reveal his choice at 11 a.m. Friday at a rally at a basketball arena in Dayton, Ohio.
Republicans close to the campaign said that the top contenders remained the same three men who have been the source of speculation for weeks: former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and, possibly, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut.
It was unclear how seriously Mr. McCain was considering his good friend Mr. Lieberman, who favors abortion rights and whose selection could set off a revolt among delegates at the Republican National Convention next week in Minneapolis-St. Paul as well as a furious backlash among Christian conservatives, a crucial voting bloc of the Republican Party...
Mr. Romney remained the most talked-about possibility on Wednesday among party officials and on cable television
But Mr. Pawlenty gained some currency as the day wore on because of what were perceived as Mr. Romneys downsides

If it's either Romney or Pawlenty, it will be a pretty boring ticket. |

They keep reporting it like McCain is doing the picking. I think we know better than that, that the GOP would let that happen. Who's in charge of the search/vetting committee for VP at the GOP?
We all (should) know that in 2000 it was Cheney, and he picked himself.
{Edit:
Here's what they said back in May.} |

If it's Romney, there will be a field day over his sons campaigning while Beau Biden goes to serve in Iraq.
Their lives could even be in danger. |

I saw a headline on some site this morning saying McCain is denying he will announce his pick on Friday. I was suckered by Biden already this month, so I choose to disbelieve McCain this time.
In a way, it would be good if McCain chooses Romney...then we can have the racial bigots refusing to vote for Obama and the religious bigots refusing to vote for Romney. Then MSNBC could organize a debate between them over which is the greater threat to the republic and watch them implode on live TV. |

I wonder how many of the people whining about the man's sons--last I heard, they're not his slaves and the United States does not have conscription--not being in the military actually are or have been in the military themselves.

There are religious bigots who'll refuse to vote for Biden also. Sadly, there are still plenty of people who think that the Roman Catholic Church is "a cult"/"not Christian." |

I was in the US Navy for twelve years. Does that give me this exclusive right to whine? No? I'll just take the bragging rights then, tyvm. |

Quite honestly because it would double up on the experience issue and Romney does have a background in terms of running a business and a state. If he wasn't Mormon, I think he would have been the pick. |
