I think that it depends on the sport...a baseball announcer can't be compared to a hockey announcer and vice-versa.
IMHO, Marv Albert...basketball, Harry Carrey.....baseball, Bob Cole.....hockey and Al Michaels....football.
On a side note, being from Canada I associate Paul Romanuk with the WJH team....classic! |

| John Madden was also very good for football, I think he did MNF. |

Ernie Harwell....one of the best announcers for any sport ever. Listening to Detroit Tigers games on the radio haven't been the same since.
He's right up there with Vin Scully, Harry Carey, Jack Buck and Marty Brennanman. Those are possibly the best baseball announcers ever. Today's group includes Johnny Miller and Joe Buck.
Basketball - Chick Hern and Johnny Most, though being a Detroiter I hated both, yet know they are probably the two best of all time. The Pistons George Blaha is great to listen to as well, very underrated.
College Basketball - Jim Nantz, Ron Franklin(also college football), Brad Nessler
College Football - Bob Ufer(Michigan), Keith Jackson, Al Michaels( as we as loads of other sports)
Hockey - Bob Cole, Gary Thorn |

| Gotta make a shoutout to drunk Dave Niehaus of the Seattle Mariners. Just got into the Hall of Fame this year. Been with them since the beginning in '77. |

Definitely agree about Ernie Harwell and Chick Hearn. Johnny Most, well I was a Laker fan in the 80s when Magic's battles with Bird were legend and the Celtic Laker rivalry was huge.
Johnny Most called the games with Dick Enberg, and as a Laker fan it was pure hell listening to him when he called the finals. We'd turn off the sound on the TV and listen to Chick on the radio. He was a legend, no doubt, though his voice sounded raspy and inebriated.
Al Michaels/Keith Jackson = gold standard. |

For college football I always liked Keith Jackson.
Baseball is Dave Niehaus
Basketball is Kevin Calabro |

Bob Cole, yes, but he probably should have stopped about 5 years ago.
How about Jow Bowen and Harry Neale as the worst announcers ever. |

Worst? I cannot stand Dick Vitale. Oh god, I know some people love him but I hate him. That's why I like Vin, he's a less is more guy.
The Korean olympic baseball announcers as well. Geez, they are homers x100000. I thought the guy was gonna have cardiac arrest when the Korean hit a homer, he was literally screaming at the top of his lungs. |

Vin Scully? That coffin dodger. He should be taken outside & shot, in fact that should have happened to him 60 years ago.
David Coleman is the correct answer. |

Bob Cole? Bob friggin' Cole? The guy can't even remember the players' names: "...and Messier dumps the puck in, Chelios and...and... number 16 for the Oilers are in a foot-race...", and he always embellishes the mundane plays: "...a sixty footer floats in on ... on... the goaltender, and Oh! What a game-saver!!!"
How about Dick Irvin (Jr)? Dick Irvin was the voice of hockey as far as I'm concerned, and being from Montreal, he'd always do the play-by-play forn the radio. He was so good, we'd turn down the sound on the tv and listen to him call the game on the radio.
What used to really hurt was when the Leafs were eliminated, we'd sometimes get Hab games called by Bob Cole. Urgh! Bring out the radio! |

Dick Irvin? He's annoying: "Back in 1903..." Gimme a break. |

^ I loved Dick's anecdotes of years gone by... Plus, I heard Bob Cole's an asshat in real life.
Do any other Montrealers remember Dick Irvin's Hockey Magazine, a half-hour show on, correct me if I'm wrong, Sunday evenings? Dick Irvin IS hockey!!! |

The late, great, Don Whitman.
Nobody did the Olympics or CFL better. Also fantastic at NHL.
Ed Whalen was good too. (Calgary Flames, Stampede Wrestling). |
