Ugh.. Security in my building is TIGHT! Not only do they use a card system to access all the doors and when you enter the building, at lobby level, there is a sort of high tech subway turnstile. It sort of looks like this.
Today another desk cowboy was standing there, trying to use his deactivated card. Poor guy. I swiped him in with my card! |

Lush is your company struggling at all? Mine doesn't have these kind of jockeys around (altough 1000 employess did create 100 million dollars in profit last year here). Our guys never stop working. Ya the security is insane ain't it. Every door has to be swiped pretty much. Keep it up, I'm actually interested in hearing other peoples Chaebol Xp.

Got a question for you other corporate workers. What kind of Visa are you on? E2's are easy but rare because the company must have a registered institute on site. The hoops I have to jump through for an E7 (i think) are crazy. It's almost easier going the E9 3d route for a fast visa. How about you fellas?

From what I see, no. And my E-7 was on top of my F-2-1. Perhaps thats why it went so well. My E-7 is my secondary visa. |

It varies. No easy answer for this Tokki. For me they wanted a masters and experience. They got 1/2 of what they were looking for! |

Great post Lush!
I think I actually replaced a couple of Desk Cowboys back in Australia while I was doing some "temporary" work through an agency. For one job, I replaced someone who left because the job was too demanding. I read novels from 9am~5pm most days! I got bored pretty quickly but the money was nice.
Too many times I've come across people who talk up their jobs. So busy, so demanding, so stressful etc. But the reality is quite the opposite.
But anyway, this is Korea, and the whole "face" thing come into it. I look forward to your next update |

Was it a bitch getting the E7 oked by the minister of whatever section you are under, or is it just a load that you need that, and that its tough to get it oked. I'm on an F2-1 as well and would love some info about what you did to get yours done. My boss likes the idea of an E7 but thought it looked like a pain in the ass to get it done. My wifes research has shown the same thing. Immigration says its the hardest visa to get Oked. I'd apprectiate any advice or info either of you could pass on. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post here. Thanks in advance

Does the management tell you specifically not to give those desk cowboys any work and not to interact with them in certain settings? or is it just some unspoken thing?
on a side note, the hagwon that i worked at before had no qualms about firing someone and it was definitely called for... it's interesting to see how things are like in other spheres. |

It's really hard for these Chaebols to fire people. The laws and make it really tough. It's actually an interesting solution.

interesting but terribly inefficient (well, from my point of view anyways). now, i'm curious about the laws that allow this... do you have to kill someone in order to get an official boot from the chaebols?
p.s. on a really side note, how do you get those avatars? it won't let me download one... yours is kind of cool but it gives me a headache. it reminds me when the pokemon movie came out and there were problems about people fainting and stuff bc of the flashes |

I dont think I even spoke to immigration when I got my E-7. I went with someone in the Chaebols legal department. That guy spoke to the immigration guy. There was (for me) no interview (BUT THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN INTERVIEW) or anything. I left my ARC and passport at immigration for a week and then had them couriered back to me. I guess its all dependent on the immigration officer you deal with.

Yes, I have been specifically told, and then had to sing a form stating that I understand, that I cannot, under any circumstance, assign any task at all to the desk cowboys. Its an unspoken thing that you are not supposed to talk to them. Its retarded. |

So lush, are you saying this is YOUR experience or that of all expats working for Korean companies? I've worked for Korean companies and though my experience was a bit similar, I can't say (and neither can you) that all expats went through the same thing. My US citizen buddy was with PriceWaterhouseCoopers as a consultant and they worked him to death. He was brought in for specific projects and such.
The ones on the expat package and stuff are given duties and such, given the presence of major consulting firms in Korea such as PWC, Deloitte and Touche and McKinsey. The ones hired locally are oftentimes just proofreaders and stuff as many Koreans consider them just one step up from the English teachers. By the way, there ARE fluent Korean speakers among the expats - lawyer Jeffrey Jones is one of them and this other guy I know did sports marketing for Diamond Ad, and his Korean was FLAWLESS. Many who are fluent in Korean choose NOT to associate with other foreigners. |
