I'd hate to renovate that... imagine the smell! Might be cheaper to strip the entire unit and repair it. Or rebuild the building depending on how small it is.

I've seen shows about this kind of thing. It is related to hoarding, but I can't remember the details.

This isn't something that just happens. It is an illness.

When I worked for the Social Services in England, one of my cases was an elderly lady who was a compulsive hoarder. Her tiny bungalow was just crammed full of stuff she had purchased from mail order catalogues, newspapers, magazines. The stuff was all over the place, stacked neatly in piles that were 4 or 5 feet high.
However, it wasn't filthy like the OP pictures.
