I would buy an ipod except I don't like the way itunes is set up. I don't want to have to register with a credit card number. I dont want to have to resync everytime i want to delete a song. I heard they are really fragile anf if they nreak the repairs are expesive. There are a few other things I don't like about them.

Yeah itunes, blows and iturds are overpriced "look I'm cool, NOT" pieces of junk. There's a thread a week here about some poor sucker looking to get one fixed which i imagine isn't cheap let alone the hassle... Cool

As a newbie, I bought my first mp3 player (a 30g video Ipod) almost two years ago.

Looked good (and still does thanks to the case I had to shell out even more money for), and the earbuds sound fine (disregard the audiophiles), but the hassles included:

1) finding out that uploading video wasn't as easy as it should have been. They had to be converted into mp4s, and that was unbelieveably time consuming.

2) uploading a bunch of songs onto your Ipod, and the itunes is so anal about fonts, so you could have The White Stripes listed about 5 times just because one song had it's album information, or because each track had a different spelling mistake.

On top of this, you put the album title in the song's information, but neglect to do so for every other song on the album--what happens?--it only registers the one with the album name and disregards the rest.

3) False advertising; it wasn't a 30g mp3 player, you actually only get about 28.5 gigs because of the friggin software.

All that being said, once you figure all this out, it's a great player, but being a former dj with a huge collection, I found 30gs wasn't nearly enough, and the battery life was considerably better with the 80g model.

Because I know how to do all of this stuff now, I'd get another Ipod unless I could find another player with equal memory and a better price.

Not remotely unique to iPods. This is the price you have to pay unless you want a full fledged PMP.

Highlight all the songs at the same time and enter the album and album artist.

3) False advertising; it wasn't a 30g mp3 player, you actually only get about 28.5 gigs because of the friggin software.

Again, this is not even remotely unique to ipods. Look at ANY hard drive and you'll see the advertised space is greater than the formatted space.

http://www.anythingbutipod.com/

I share the anything but ipod sentiment. I would go with the Cowon D2, especially in Korea given it supports the watching TV in the subway. It's got a nice sized screen and you can snap in cheap SD cards. The only down side is everything is touch screen operated and that makes it a pain. It's a pain to use it if you like jumping around mp3s.

The Cowon needs you to crunch down video files via its own converter but the converter works quickly, on a wide range of formats, and produces very small files that retain great quality. The screen isn't a bad size, considering what's out there these days. (Really, I found a compaq PDA to be a great portable media player with a screen just big enough.)

I have a 8 gb Zune 2 (not sure if its available in Korea) and it's not so bad. Lets you resume listening/watching everything. You can have a dozen resume states on the go. It remembers them all. It's got a small video screen and everything needs to be crunched down to a mp4, I believe.

[quote]2. You don't need to sync every time you delete a song.

That makes me feel better.

3. I highly doubt the failure rates on iPods are significantly higher than other mp3 players. No doubt you've heard more complaints about iPods simply due to the fact that there are so many more people who own iPods out in the world.

Without a doubty, this IS true. Laughing

5. No other mp3 player on the market (as far as I know) currently has as many applications as the iPod Touch. What I currently use every day on mine:

New York Times app
E-Book reader app
Safari
You Tube
Weather
The list goes on. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of apps available for the Touch, with more on the way all the time.

How many of these applications are free. And do you have to pay when you use them?

I am not an anti-ipod person, per se. Just was wondering what was out there.

Did you buy you touch in Korea? If so about how much do they run here? What kind of AS do you get here?

Thanks.

There are hundreds of free apps for the Touch. Of the ones I listed, only the book reader costs money, and that one is $9.99. (Well worth the money.)

I bought the touch last year when it was 320,000 won, but the new version is around 229,000 won for an 8 gig. As far as A/S, I have no idea. I haven't had any problems with mine.

This is true of any databased player.

3) False advertising; it wasn't a 30g mp3 player, you actually only get about 28.5 gigs because of the friggin software.

Its not the sofware. but how the bytes are counted. If you count 1000mb = 1Gb then it is 30Gb, but 1000mb does not a gb make, its 1024.

As said above, all drives are counted this way. The drives in iPods are the same drives in nearly every hd based mp3 player, Toshiba drives.

All that being said, once you figure all this out, it's a great player, but being a former dj with a huge collection, I found 30gs wasn't nearly enough, and the battery life was considerably better with the 80g model.

I found that 80Gb wasnt enough, I have a 160, with 90Gb of music on it, and I have anotehr 30 Gb of music to add soon. Gotta love what.cd
