As a newbie, I bought my first mp3 player (a 30g video Ipod) almost two years ago.

Looked good (and still does thanks to the case I had to shell out even more money for), and the earbuds sound fine (disregard the audiophiles), but the hassles included:

1) finding out that uploading video wasn't as easy as it should have been. They had to be converted into mp4s, and that was unbelieveably time consuming.

2) uploading a bunch of songs onto your Ipod, and the itunes is so anal about fonts, so you could have The White Stripes listed about 5 times just because one song had it's album information, or because each track had a different spelling mistake.

On top of this, you put the album title in the song's information, but neglect to do so for every other song on the album--what happens?--it only registers the one with the album name and disregards the rest.

3) False advertising; it wasn't a 30g mp3 player, you actually only get about 28.5 gigs because of the friggin software.

All that being said, once you figure all this out, it's a great player, but being a former dj with a huge collection, I found 30gs wasn't nearly enough, and the battery life was considerably better with the 80g model.

Because I know how to do all of this stuff now, I'd get another Ipod unless I could find another player with equal memory and a better price.

I share the anything but ipod sentiment. I would go with the Cowon D2, especially in Korea given it supports the watching TV in the subway. It's got a nice sized screen and you can snap in cheap SD cards. The only down side is everything is touch screen operated and that makes it a pain. It's a pain to use it if you like jumping around mp3s.

The Cowon needs you to crunch down video files via its own converter but the converter works quickly, on a wide range of formats, and produces very small files that retain great quality. The screen isn't a bad size, considering what's out there these days. (Really, I found a compaq PDA to be a great portable media player with a screen just big enough.)

I have a 8 gb Zune 2 (not sure if its available in Korea) and it's not so bad. Lets you resume listening/watching everything. You can have a dozen resume states on the go. It remembers them all. It's got a small video screen and everything needs to be crunched down to a mp4, I believe.
