I'd skip Kobe. It is nothing special. Compare it to a Gwangju or Incheon(attached to a bigger city-well nearly). Definantly to work in japan pick Kyoto. Its a gorgeous city and really near Osaka and near the ancient capital Nara. If i moved to japan I would go here. A lot of the city is world heritage(think Gyeongju but not completely screwed up) and that is it.

I spent most of the one trip in Kyoto. I didn't like it. I found the foreigners too much for me.. they were TOO into Japan. I kind of had a bad feeling about Japan after spending time in that city. I think its better for a Japanophile kind of person. In addition, I didn't enjoy the nightlife there at all. I ended up drinking in the streets from vending machines all night long and ended up in the hostel where there were tons of foreigners with no money to go out talking about it. It was a big turn-off at the time.

I do appreciate the Kobe advice. Actually I'm looking for places to 'write-off' the list. I tend to get excited about places I've never been only to arrive there and realize they aren't all that.

Osaka I never partied the night in although I've been there twice. From all accounts, I should have spent my nights there. I'm eager to give that a try another time.

I'll give a list of good Japanese cities for you.
Tokyo - obviously
Osaka- same as above
Fukuoka - as discussed
Sapporo - great city that while freezing in winter is brilliant in summer and comparable to Fukuoka where there is a cool Japanese population and a brill downtown. plus the Sapporo beer factory is there. i've been there 8 times because my ex was from there and love the joint. If it wasn't for here I would move there if I went to japan.
Nagano - if you love winter sports(home of the 98 olympics) it is a great town. Really clean and smallish but great fun and because they had the olympics there a little more modern and stylish than you would expect.

Avoid - basically all the same reason, middle of the road and nothing special. You could live there and it would be OK but think of Daegu, daejeon or Gwangju, not too bad but really would you pick there.
Kobe
Niigata
Kagoshima
Nagoya
Yokohama
Sendai
All these have a lot of jobs but are nothing special.

I was turned off by Tokyo because of the subway expense. I tend to explore cities A LOT! Go everywhere.. and bar hop. Tokyo would be bad because same salaries but I'd spend way too much money on drinking, rent, and travel.

Osaka seems much better.. as it seems to be the same from everything I read..but perhaps I'd save more on rent and travel than Tokyo.

Fukuoka seems even better because no travel and rent is cheap and meanwhile salaries are the same.

So this rumor about the Happy Cock.. its always wild like that mentioned above all the time?

Not nowadays. they got into a bit of trouble apparnetly but my mate went there about 2 months ago and it was wet t-shirt night and these J-girls were just spraying each other. That was good enogh for him. Smile The drink specials still exist though.
And on a side note he picked up at the drop of a hat and he is not what I would call a catch. maybe he was lying to me about picking up but I'd believe it as i saw some incriminating evidence. Very Happy [/quote]

I've visited Vladivostok and I really enjoyed it. Didn't find it dangerous at all and I was out and about the whole time, day and night.

Drinking is cheap and it's easy to meet people. However, at this time of year, the weather will be pretty harsh.

I just booked my stuff for Shanghai. I've been to Fukuoka and it's lovely but far too expensive. Vladivostok would probably be too dangerous for a bumbling idiot like me.

I would like to go to Thailand or the Philippines but I'm not going to be able to go from Seoul in Winter to Bangkok in January. I lived there for 6 months and I never really got used to the heat.

thanks for advice everybody

BB

p.s. where is the Korean consulate in Shanghai?? Anybody applied for an E-2 visa there??

How is the happy *beep*? I heard some wild stories about that place. i recall once i read that they had some night where everyone and anyone who showed up in their underwear (and their underwear only) was able to drink free for the night? Does that sound like it could be true?

Happy Ccock (minus one C)

I met (and have HIS photo to prove it) Marylin Manson there!!

If you go there, ask to see the photo album. Lots of famous people went there. Last time I was there, I returned to my hotel, but I was not alone.

It's all in what you have to offer them.......

DAMN! Making me put Fukouka higher and higher on my list of places to live and work at some point in the future. (As if I don't have enough on that list already!).

I noticed this every time I went to Japan, which is about 6 times now. You see foreigners all over the place, speaking Japanese, dressing Japanese, working in Japanese stores...it was kind of bizarre and somewhat disheartening.

I love Fukuoka.

I love people riding around on their bikes and wearing the worst-matching outfit they can possible find.

ha ha

nah, if korean people are mismatched, it is completely a result of their very bad taste in conservative clothes (or on a more serious note, a lack of funds).
But in Funky Fukuoka, they are like some expensive sixties/seventies/disco/aerobics/eighties/high-heels on bicycles...thing.

i love it. when i go there i want to wear mismatching clothes and ride a bike around with stilettos.

but then i'd be one of those people who've turned japanese.
