My school-friend's father lived in Pt Moresby. His house was in a compound surrounded by a twelve foot wall. Armed security in the compound, too.
Is that security need common throughout PNG?
I thought Solomon Islands might be similar but haven't heard bad news about that place. |

Nice theory -- it fits in with the pattern of (white) explorers spreading diseases and basically ruining everything they touch -- but the violence in PNG's highlands long preceded Michael Leahy's 1930 "discovery" of that area. Speaking of theories, linguists conjecture that it's the revenge killing that resulted in the cultural isolation that led to the incredible degree of linguistic diversity.
The whole myth of the peaceful "native" living in harmony with nature and one another is just that. If you want to support that view in yourself, go rent The Gods Must Be Crazy (and ignore the sarcasm inherent in the portrayal). The truth is closer to this: We're all messed up, and yet we all have the potential for genius and honor. |
