The bigger picture...I would guess would be that this encourages more piracy.
I am not taking sides in this debate by the way. I'm not in favor of paying ransom, but if it were my son, husband or relative I'm sure I would be willing.
In the short term it's probably cheaper to just pay up, but in the long term...
I don't know.
I've heard rumors that they are thinking of installing big guns on all ships that have to pass through those waters. We'll have to see what comes about. |

| Rather than pay ransom, wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to fund an international naval force to patrol the area? It isn't just money being lost. All those sailors are being held captive for months on end. |
