| Passive aggression takes many different forms. I'll admit that, in Australia, one does get a sense of "if-you-get-too-tall-i'll-cut-you-down" but is that really any worse than "i'll-impose-my-culture-on-you-and-if-you-don't-like-it-you'll-be-my-enemy"? |

You say that like it's a bad thing. |

every time I meet an Aussie in Korea the first thing they do is smile and talk about the interesting things they've done or seen. even if it was a bad experience, they talk about it with this chill, "life's an adventure" sort of attitude. They rarely bad-mouth Korea or other foreigners, and they're genuinely eager to make new friends. When I meet a new Canadian or American, they immediately start whining about America or Korea (respectively), in a condescending tone that suggests they know all and come from the only perfect culture on Earth.
Aussie's kick ass is what I'm saying. But dudes, get a new song. Waltzing Matilda makes about as much sense as Louis Louis. |
Nicely said, thanks mate. Just read some of the other posts and this threades seems to have turned into an Aussie bashing thread. Yeah, we like a chat and a laugh mostly and often at ourselves. There are not that many of us here either. |

Met a few in Korea, quite a few in Vietnam, a few in China (gonna have an Aussie co-teacher next week, haven't met yet). I liked most of 'em. Rarely met any Aussie females though. Are they less adventurous than the guys? Seems like many of the guys have no qualms about taking off to various parts of the world. (Of course, I met them all outside Australia to begin with; haven't been there myself.)
Bill Bryson's book about Aus. and some history, "In A Sunburned Country," was pretty good. |

I know more aus women than blokes that have, and are, travelling & living os. Perhaps we're just a little more discerning in the company we keep?
Or perhaps you're just unlucky. |

Yeah probably unlucky. Worked with several Aussies. Met a bunch in bars. They were almost all guys. Kiwis, on the other hand, met more female than male.

My two cents on this topic... I think even the Aussies are like the other countries in this world. There are laid back people and then there are people in the middle of the road and then the in your face types. When we lived in Aus. the experiences I had were the same that happen in most countries. I saw racism and hatred towards foreigners and the natives (abos) I live in alice springs. I also saw people that were friendly and helpful and would do anything to help you out. And other that just didn't give a rats arss either way. But I have had great friends from Aus and I could careless about your nationality as long as you don't try and push your views on me and we can have a good laugh and be friends.
And as for Steve Irwin it is a shame the man died but as a American I really didn't care for his tv show it was a bit to flashy for me. |
