The whisperers.
Usually these are middle school girls who are just so shy and lack self-confidence, possibly because of their limited English.
The delayed action whisperers.
Keep you in suspense for ages and only after much encouragement do they finally mouth something you can't hear anyway.
I had a high school girl student whose English was actually very good, but she spoke so softly that it was really difficult to understand her. Shame really. |

Perfect attendant - this student never misses a class - ever! He comes even when all the other kids don't i.e, the day before chuseok, the day their public school has a picnic, or if he's deathly ill with a highly contageous flu, etc. Even if nobody else in his class shows up he will, and so you will have to teach.
Englishless Lisa - Come to think of it, this sudent has never spoken a word of English since you've been a teacher. When you call on her, she looks down and doesn't answer until you eventually give up. When everyone is repeating, she lipsyncs.

I forgot one:
The shadow: I had a few of these this year. This is a student so quiet, and so regular looking, they hide in the back behind taller students hoping the teacher won't see them.
I actually had a student that I wasn't aware of for a couple months into class, she was an excellent shadow.
This is a class of about 25 students. |

The teacher- triggered talker:
This kid is quiet until you open your mouth. As soon as you start teaching he immediately starts talking to the student nearest him. The sound of your voice trying to get attention, triggers him to do the exact opposite of what you require from him. |

The New Kid........They've joined half-way through the session so they believe they don't have to do anything because they missed a few weeks. They often become....The Lump
The Un-funny Humor Kid............. They think it's funny to hide your marker/book/tape, EVERYDAY OF THE SESSION!!!!
The Sharp Breaker............... Spends the first 20 minutes trying get his stupid mechanical pencil working...Probably a ploy.
Cross-eyed Chris.......The unfortunate kid with the crossed-eye thing going on who sits right in front of you and looks at you strangely all the time...or is he? |
