It is Korea who will not pay for qualified teachers |
Apart from the fact that they already pay the highest or at least close to it in the whole esl game. Japan pays a higher salary, but when you factor in tax, free housing and airfare, and the cost of living here, it's the best deal going. It seems that there is only a certain amount of money to go round in the feild, and they may want better teachers, but there isn't the money for it.
Here's a question: If they suddenly required a degree in either Education with an English focus, or Linguistics, or even a Maters in TESOL, but did not raise the salary, what would happen, would people still come? |

No. The Middle East pays higher. In S.A last I heard (a couple of years ago so this could be out of date) monthly pay was equivalent to $4000 Canadian dollars a month. Most places in the Middle east pay higher than Korea.
If they raised the standards but not the pay, people would still come, but not as many. Most people here have a B.A. so they would have to go back home, and salaries here would have to go up due to supply and demand. "You want me? Well so do ten other schools. What will you offer that they don't?" We could basically set our own conditions and they would have to pay, or not have a foreign teacher. |
