Life is what you make it. There's no such thing as wasted time, lost time, or success. That's just a part of the arbitrary rules/ideals made by people who have duped the masses into their way of thinking. Many people choose the expat life because they have no desire for a conventional life back home...and many are suprisingly happy, as well as secretly envied by their friends and family back in the rat race.
