What's the word on other portable mp3 players?

From Apple:

Quote:
Mac requirements
Macintosh computer with FireWire port; Mac OS X v10.1.5 or later (Mac OS X 10.3 or later recommended)

Windows requirements
PC with FireWire or USB 2.0 port, or FireWire or USB 2.0 card; Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or Windows XP Home or ProfessionalMac requirements

But if you're using a PC with USB 2.0, you'll need to buy the USB cable, since the iPod only comes with a Firewire one.

I-pods work with PC's too, but you need a firewire connection or buy an extra USB connection.

I looked at other MP3 players before buying my i-pod, but the ones with the GB memories were all huge compared to the i-pod (this was Sep 2003, maybe other companies have smaller models on the market now).

yup - i use one. i have a 10gig model. fits a lot of music. if yu are looking at buying one go for a larger model as they come with accessories that are essential IMO.

i have 80gig of music on my hard disk so the ipod only fits a fraction of it. i like to load it up with just one artist and listen to that exclusively for a couple of weeks. just finished a couple of weeks of zappa. before that it was phish. am now on a bruce cockburn thing, thanks to harpeau's recently singing me a mesmorising rendition of "gavin's woodpile".

i mentioned this once before but i'll say it again. apple have brilliant after sales service. i have had the keyboard in my powerbook replaced twice now for free - simply because of coffee spills. AND after i dropped my ipod HARD on a tiled floor and buggered the hard disk in it, they replaced the entire unit free of charge. no pc dealer will do that for yu.

get an ipod - but don;t drop it!!!!

I still like my RAM-only mp3 player- almost 5 years old and still going strong. It also has a mic and an FM tuner and can scroll text files on the screen (speech notes, etc.)

Only 128MB but remember 5 years ago that was smokin'! 2&1/2 cds at cd quality, about 40-50 songs FM stereo quality, and about 70-80 at am stereo quality. It's about the size and weight of a small pager. i've used the mic function to record lectures (just fine) and concerts (not so fine- it's not really designed to do that). It's also my 'sneaker-net' between work and home since floppies are too small and no one uses zip disks anymore- you can load whatever files/programs you want onto it.

I can understand the appeal but I don't want an mp player with a hard drive at the moment- as you've already indicated, you drop it and you could be screwed. So the Ipod doesn't appeal to me at all, but different strokes for different folks...

i couldn't agree more bulsajo. i often wish the ipod was smaller and more rugged.

but it is good for me. i need the capacity. i am an obsessive music listener. there is music playing in my apartment whenever i am awake. and my ipod is always on my belt - earplugs in whenever i am not actually teaching...

i'm still a fan of the iriver hard drive based mp3 player.

the size of it is 2.4 inches by 0.75 inches by 4.1 inches; 5.6 ounces. it is also the first to have an LCD remote.

Is that bigger or smaller than an Ipod? Is it cheaper or more expensive?

yes - that's exactly what i did.

before i came to korea (2 years ago) i ripped most of my CD's onto an external firewire drive that i purchased specifically for that purpose. it saved a lot of space. i did not really want to bring all my CD's to korea.

i buy a lot of CD's here too. and copy friends' CD's. and of cours ethere are the downloads. my collection continues to grow.

80's stuff? what would that be? maybe i can share some music with yu. i have space on my homepage where i share files. have some indian music there right now if anyone is interested. url is below.

I just purchased a Samsung YP-55 mp3 player... 256 mb memory, FM radio, record voices, etc. etc.

Starting price was 280,000, but I managed to talk them down to 230,000...

Anyway, it seems nice enough... the thing is so small I put it on my keychain.
