one of three existential, meaning-of-life, smell-the-roses kind of films out now:
9/10 Seven Pounds with Will Smith is great but a bit somber of a flick
8/10 Yes Man with Jim Carey is pretty good with a bit of humour but stock acting
7/10 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a slow, plodding, retread of a film with good acting, decent premise (even though not much done with it) and some romantic chemistry. |
I agree except with 7 pounds...
Seven pounds 4/10...good drama, but makes you feel like killing yourself after...christ its depressing...if you liked pursuit of happiness you'll like this...
Yes man....def 8/10, i hate Carey but really liked this movie..not sure if i was in the mood but i found it quite good.
day the earth stood still....awesome....8/10
Haven't seen Benjamin button, guess i will as there's not many English movies left...but there are so many good movies coming out soon, cant wait....
Gutted about watcher though!!! |

LOL! Me too. It took everything to keep from walking out before it was finished. The only reason I stayed was because I was waiting for Rosenbrau to open. |

| I illegally downloaded it and I still want my money back. There were more godawful problems with that movie than I can count on my two hands. |

I saw the original years ago at The Bagdad Theatre in Portland, Oregon. It was even worse. So much so that people starting mocking it which made it tolerable. That and McMenamin's Terminator Stout.

Are you kidding? The Korean woman in the movie was as geeky as the bank officer character. She even had a lisp.
About Jim Carey, I kind of respect him. His niche is not real over the top extraordinary eye feasts, but reasonable budget flicks. A little bit of comedy. Yes Man is not really forgettable, just not as wild as Me Myself and Irene or Liar Liar, or my favorite of favorites, Pet Detective. "Ahh, the Monopoly Man, here, hold this," smack...
PS: If you want a suckful movie, see that new one Valkerie with Tom Cruise. Now, that sucks ass. |

Haven't seen "Seven Pounds" but I did like "Pursuit of Happyness." It wasn't depressing really, was it? Based on a true story of a guy who went from homeless to millionaire, wasn't it? |

| As Tom Cruise would say, "This movie didn't just suck balls, it sucked my balls, har har har har har." As if we are supposed to know wtf he's talking about. |

| I thought "Yes Man" was pretty good. Not great, but definitely not terrible. Worth seeing. |

You sound like a total film snob who would rather watch some terrible Avant-garde film by Stan Brakhage, Jean Cocteau or Kenneth Anger. Not that there is anything wrong with liking "Un chien andalou", but films like "Yes Man" have their own merits.
Personally, I liked "Yes Man." I thought it was a nice piece of film fluff that made me smile for an hour and a half. |

I agree, "Yes Man" was delightfully fluffy, if you tolerate that sort of feeling. Back home I would probably have a lot worse to say, but for some reason my tolerance for borderline corny films is quite high in this country. |

I am a film snob, and don't care for Brakhage or Anger all that much.
I like good movies
It's also really hard for me to tolerate bad comedies, and it seems a bit silly that adults are discussing a Jim Carey Movie. What merits does a film like Yes Man have, exactly, other than dumbing down the cultural gene pool? |

Did you know that Strakhage is in Cannibal the Musical? The first movie Trey Parker made in college, before South Park? He wears a tiny hat in it. That scene is funnier than anything in Yes Man.
I mean an hour and a half long film using a concept that would be hard to make a comedy sketch over five minutes with? Is even SNL that bad these days? |

I thought yes man was decent enough, not great but something to kill an hour and a half of my day!! I would have liked if they had of followed the actual story of the guy who did it, his name is Danny Wallace (you can actually see him sitting at the bar in the scene of the movie weher danny masterson chats up the old irish woman) anyway that author has carried out some rediculous things like starting his own country and getting thousands of people to join "join me" even though they didn't know what it was!!
He also travelled around with dave gorman (who was his flat mate at the time) to find other dave gormans in the world and then Dave made a tv show about it. |

Instead of a separate thread for each movie, how about an ongoing movie review thread that could be regularly updated and referred to?
If the OP wants, he could just change (edit) the title of this one to "The Movie Review Thread" ...
I saw Benjamin Button recently, and I thought it was kind of Forest Gump-esque (minus the comedy...)
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett both give excellent performances, and Pitt might pick up a "Best Actor" Oscar for his effort, but the darkhorse contender in that category is Mickey Rourke, for his impressive work in "The Wrestler". |

Seven pounds might be nominated for best screenplay: the story is told in a very interesting way, us in the dark about certain details until later on, a very intriguing bit of storytelling, even if somber at the end

no *beep* way should he get close to a nomination
but then again a (MAKE-UP) ACTING oscar did go to Kidman for wearing a nose in The Hours.
Pitt was next to atrocious, the make-up did all the acting
gawd how this pisses me off |
